Gravatar I think the paperclips and Jizz Powder title would have summed up the contents nicely, but oh well. This may be entirely naive (because the information comes from a middle school reading- Pearl S. Buck's the Good Earth), but does green green oily have to do with richness? According to Pearl fatness and greasiness were both signs of wealth and I'm just guessing on the green.

Gravatar Warm, very warm. I'm impressed! And also not surprised about your title preferences.

Gravatar Sorry, completely off topic but....I hear tell blogspot and also Google's cache features is no longer blocked in the mainland. True?

Gravatar Oh, Ian, THANK YOU! You are totally right--Blogspot is unblocked! I would never have figured it out and would have continued with proxies for ever and ever were it not for you. (Now I'm suddenly feeling the pressure to make nice to China on here so as to remain proxy-free!) Cross your fingers that this lasts.

I confess to not even knowing about the existence of Google cache until now. But I will check it out and let you know.

Gravatar I edited a book last spring on "scenic spots" in China (disclaimer: I am NOT a China scholar), and I couldn't help but think of it when I saw your description of the "enhancements" at the Summer Palace! The book explored the ways in which touristy/scenic places in China are carefully shaped and programmed and their "meaning" dictated by the Chinese state. It's not out yet, but it was fascinating. And as for you, m'dear, you'd better be taking notes for the next bestseller. How about "Hot and Noisy: The Unchained Melodies of Beijing"?

Gravatar Oh man, I love that title! I will get cracking on it--will you agree to edit it?
