Gravatar Oh my god, Cate! This one made me get a little misty-eyed. That is such a cute little puppy. Almost makes me want to head over to China and adopt him. Definitely pass on information about helping out.
PUPPY!!!!!

Gravatar So many things...

Cripplespot--ha! That Mark is a funny one. Where is good old Trip? Did you sell him at a garage sale before moving or is he also picking up a few bits of Chinese?

Jane Goodall. Loved In the Shadow of Man when I read it in 9th grade. LOVED it. Tell me you didn't read her in second grade, you little genius.

Do you really know the word for "ligament" in Chinese? Your skills continue to amaze me.

Gravatar Oh yeah, and awwwwwww, Oreo. I want him.

Gravatar Elnie, if you had only gotten to meet him in person! He is almost ubearably cute, especially because he's so quiet. I will definitely let you know how you can help out.

And Amy, YES I still have Trip! I may not be quite the mother you are, but sell him on the stoop???? No, no, no, he is here in China relaxing and eating rice. As for Jane Goodal, I did not read in the Shadow of Man. And to further tarnish your view of my intelligence, sadly I did not actually know the word for ligament; Oreo's ligament issue was communicated to me in a very roundabout fashion. I only wish I was as intelligent as you fashion me to be, my friend.

Gravatar Oh god. Oh my god. Jesus. This post killed me.

Gravatar That puppy is WAY too cute. I just want to scoop him up and hold him.

That being said, your story is all too familiar to me (I've lived in China and have visited many times thereafter).

The Chinese have not gotten to the point (socially speaking) where there is a genuine respect for animals. I give them a little bit of slack since respect for humans isn't quite all there either, but Oreo's ordeal is heartbreaking because it's probably happening 10,000 fold in China (and attitudes are not changing as fast as the economy seems to be).

Your story reveals a hard fact about today's Chinese culture, but I can hope for change and maybe your story will "rub-off" on the locals (offer to print it in one of the local chinese papers--make a chinese friend to help you write it).
