It's the sort of argument that works better on postmoderns than moderns (who perhaps went more for the straight up rational approach). This explains the different structure of newer works in apologetics such as Wright's Simply Christian and Keller's Reason for God. Older works such as Lewis' Mere Christianity are much more rationally oriented.
