I feel somewhat the same way that you do about place. I think I would feel lost without family around me. I don't know that I could live and be happy away from everyone and everything I have ever known. I don't think I could move to some far off location and not see the people that matter to me every day or at least once a week. I have never tried to do this or had the opportunity so its not really an issue. All I know is that it is not place that keeps me here, but PEOPLE.

Having moved around a lot when I was young, I've learned it is the people not the place that makes your life special. I lived in So Cal most of my life and moved to Upstate NY about fifteen years ago. Do I miss California? Heck yeah! (it's about 20 degrees here right now). Would I miss NY? Heck yeah! There are a lot of wonderful things about everywhere. We make where we live special.

I agree to some extent, although I can think of places that would be very difficult for me to live because I think it would be very difficult to find like-minded folks. I think it is easier in some places then others to find a community, even a small one. But I think with some effort one can make a happy life almost anywhere (assuming your basic needs can be met).
Something about the car culture in LA has really kept me from wanting to live there, much prefer Northern CA if I leave the East.
