Gravatar I look forward to seeing others' recommendations. Off the top of my head, I loved The Magician's Assistant by Ann Patchett, Horse Heaven by Jane Smiley, and everything by Vikram Seth. Now I can't put down Crescent by Diana Abu-Jaber. I could hardly tolerate some of Smiley's other books, but this one was fabulous. Similarly, I don't like all of Ann Patchett's ouvre, but I adored The Magician's Assistant.

Novels: unpredictable and enchanting!

Gravatar I'm reading classics... Moby Dick.

Gravatar I just read Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach.

I liked it. Very interesting.

Gravatar Current book:
Wild Ducks Flying Backwards, short stories by Tom Robbins (my all time favorite author)

Recently read:
Traveling Mercies, Anne Lamott
Comfort Me With Apples, Ruth Reichl

On my beside to be read are:
Bird by Bird, Anne Lamott
Tender at the Bone, Ruth Reichl
Measuring America, Andro Linklater

Gravatar Not only do I second mynx's recommendation, I was actually thinking of you in relation to it. I currently have Mary Roach's second book "Spook" and it tweaked that "Stiff" was a New York Times bestseller. So what I want to know, is Mary Roach, bestselling science author your hero or are you seething with jealous rage?

In the meantime, I have read nothing but severely light material lately as I am doing a course and cannot read anything too deep. But I do like the Undead and... series, about a vampire who dies on her 30th birthday and becomes queen of the vampires. It's quite silly, but delightful, and I have enjoyed the whole series. I've read lots of chick lit, and most of it has been rather horrible, but you might like "What do you do all day?" which, in my opinion, is quite positive about working mothers, especially since it's a book about a stay at home mom.

Gravatar Right now I'm reading Lorrie Moore's "Anagrams" She's pretty funny. These are the most recent recommendations I have!
Ian McEwan "Saturday", Penelope Lively "The Photograph", Jhumpa Lahiri "The Namesake", Monica Ali "Brick Lane". Now I have to get to work and look up all of your other recommendations that I haven't read!

Gravatar Right now, I'm reading "Desire of the Everlasting Hills" by Thomas Cahill. On the one hand, it's interesting and thoughtful book about what life was like during the time of Jeus. (It's actually taught me a lot about Judaism.) On the other hand, he refers to Galilee as "Bumblefuck," which caught me off guard in a good sort of way.

Gravatar Right now I'm reading "Amy and Isabelle" a juicy novel about a mother daughter relationship by Elizabeth Strout.

For adventure try, "Life of Pi" by Yan Martel

Two great non-fiction reads: "Ava's Man" by Rick Bragg and "The Glass Castle" by Jeannette Walls

These are all fast fun reads.

Love the blog. Keep it up.

Gravatar Read The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. I promise you you will love it.
