Congratulations! I've suffered with mild anxiety for years. But in the last year it spiked to the point that I got a therapist and a prescription for xanax in order to help me through. The therapist has offered some good observations. But what really helped me was a book called "Embracing the Fear" by Judith Bemis and Amr Barrada. Some of the key points: accept the anxiety as a part of your life; don't fight the attacks - just try to go with the flow and experience them; give yourself an out to reduce the anxiety (trapped in a long line? you can leave if you want);try to make the self-talk that occurs during an attack positive and not negative. It's a great little book. Yesterday my therapist and I agreed to move from an appointment every 3 months to an appointment every 6 months. I felt so happy!
Take care

Congratulations on the breakthrough – it makes life liveable again.
It’s kind of where I’ve been for a several years. The upside is that I was able to move beyond the need for meds. The downside is that, although the anxiety is bearable, picking up on your analogy of a headache, it still sucks to have a headache.
