Just my two cents on the holding N back thing. I RUE the day I didn't hold my son back, and I had the same concerns as you, he's so smart (but he struggled, regardless), he'll get bored (he's been bored in every situation he's ever been in, regardless), and in my case: I paid my taxes, I want him in public school, now!
It took Elliot YEARS to catch up. He's the smallest kid in school and for boys, that matters. I would seriously consider holding N back. Just my two cents, you never listen to me though I ALWAYS TAKE YOUR ADVICE. Sniff.
And you shouldn't have gone in the room with him
