American is doing the same thing. However, all you have to do is purchase an airline ticket every 2 years or so to keep the rewards active. I'm not sure how it works if you by an AA or United ticket through travelocity or expedia.
Credit card rewards can be beneficial to a certain point. However, I'm concerned with who funds some of the outlandish rewards programs out there...zero gravity trips, spas, golf trips. It's not the rich, is every one who has a credit card. They fund the rewards through interchange fees, the biggest hidden credit card fee in the business. It's one thing to get miles but most of these are ridiculous.
