Gravatar I have to admit I don't understand why you're leaving the TIAA-CREF stuff out of your analysis. Even if rebalancing those assets is too much trouble, shouldn't you include them in your analysis?

P and I also have retirement assets in three different places (my current 401k (which I hate), my Roth, and her 403b with TIAA-CREF) and I know that excluding any of them would provide a massively incorrect picture of our asset allocation.

Gravatar Moom says:
"I wanted to comment on the retirement accounts post but there is no comment link. Anyway, was wondering why the incoming money was getting stuck in cash. I think you should allocate the incoming money across the desired allocation. Can you do that?"

Here's my answer:
The incoming money does not come in as regular autodeposits, but rather, in dribs and drabs. I put 10% of all my freelance income into the Roth. Recently I moved $100 of freelance income from one account to another, and I skimmed $10 off the top and put it in my Roth.

But your point is taken. I should really invest all the cash I have in the account quarterly, not annually. Perhaps I'll try to do that from now on.

Gravatar And now and answer to DCL's question.

I really don't have a good excuse, except that I hate this process, and I have a hard enough time using the portfolio analysis tools in my Fidelity account. If I had to add the TIAA-CREF account into the mix I'm not sure how I would do it, and I am sure that I'd procrastinate rebalancing anything for a long long time. My TIAA-CREF account is set to rebalance itself annually, so even tho I'm not looking at it alongside my other accounts this year, it should be ticking along by itself all right.

I tried to roll the TIAA-CREF account over, but alas, my former employer likes to protect us from ourselves and won't let us touch the money.

Gravatar Very interesting. I always like to see what others are invested in. Maybe I'll put together the same info. Thanks!

Gravatar Good luck with this.
