As much as I don't like how big money skews the system, I always thought CFR got some fundamental things wrong.
As a sox fan, I gotta let you know that true fans realize Buckner's crucifixion was always undeserved. He never should have been in the game at that point. Cruise over to centerfield some friday open thread if you want the whole sorry tale. Some moronic fans in the nation were so witless as to suggest we could forgive Buckner now that we've won a series, when what we should do is apologize.
Props for the righteous cite Totten gave you about hope. We haven't always agreed, but I am with you there.
You don't really play banjo, do you?

No - I have zero musical skills.
I can recite the alphabet at sufficient volume to be understood across a football stadium, though. Command voice. I'd sell my left something to be able to beat out Old MacDonald on a pennywhistle, though. My wife plays guitar and piano as well as sing. My daughters both have their own musical interests, too.
I brought up Buckner as an example of how bungling a simple play can bring crashing defeat. Not to damn him - not at all. I couldn't remember his name right off the bat, either, since I've lapsed as a fan and had to google a bunch of random search terms to find what I needed. He was a great first baseman and a solid citizen. I do agree - he rates an apology from many, many writers and pundits too anxious for an easy story to write.

The President's failure to veto the Bergen-McCarthy, uh Feingold-McCain bill, how could it have been blindness? With no other opinions than my own, does anyone think perhaps the President expected, anticipated the Supremes to have overruled it, and let the dummys take the hit? I do not know...thoughts?

Kerry -
That was exactly what I thought the case was. If he didn't sign it, the opposition would just wail about all that hard work gone to waste - and don't doubt for a moment that they wouldn't capitalize on the obvious financial advantages that would accrue to the Reps with the signing.
I think they had the 527 angle figured out long before M/F ever went to the White House.
And I think that maybe, possibly, even the Dems (and their buddy McCain) were reasonably certain that the Surpemes would do their job, even if Bush didn't.
The Congress was as surprised as I was that Bush signed, I bet.
Like I said, a trifecta. It's bad law. All of it.
