I know this isn't really your department, since you are teaching conversation to adults, but I'm curious about something. If the teaching of reading has two main schools, those would be the phonics approach and the look-say approach (or 'whole-word'). Do you have a sense whether one or the other is favored in Japan, when these adults are first taught how to read English as children?

We'll both be teaching kids as of tomorrow, ranging in age from 2 to 16. I'll write more about your question tomorrow, but for now I'll cheat by saying the answer is both (phonics and whole word, that is).
