I should not know, I could not say, I would not tell you anyway.

yo pat -- interesting post to say the least. you make some good points. for my own two bits, I'd have to say:

impending destruction is built into life, because something can't be "alive" if it exists like that forever. we measure time passing in experiences and moments, and the rate at which we experience them only changes with our perception of how little or how many we have left.

being depressed is not the "true" emotion of someone who fully grasps the situation, though i do believe most people are living in denial. i believe that the more we are accepting of the fact we will die, the more we're free to actually enjoy life.

as for our actions being "meaningless" that's true only by what you define as "meaingful". if you're trying to alter the fate of the universe, (whatever that may be), then you living a full life and having eight kids or you jumping off a bridge at 23 isn't going to change it.

But then again, if you define meaning from your own perceptions and experience of life, then helping others, watching sunsets, and planting trees is very meaningful.

And besides, who would really want to live forever?

Way to make me contemplate life and existance when it's 1am and I should be going to bed.

I'm too tired to comment right now, but my opinion tends towards ianmack's, which I found particularly well put.

Yeh...diagrams...woot!

Well aren't we feeling just a tad Nihilistic today...

Pat, you've touched out a subject that people have contemplated for thousands of years, and will continue to contemplate for thousands more. The meaning of life is a tricky thing, and the universe doesn't seem to give us much reassurance that things are going to be great in the end (thru things like entropy and randomness and people killing puppies). Or does it? Who knows?

Watch I Heart Huckabees. It has a very interesting take on the whole subject.

my brain hurts

Interesting thoughts Pat.

I have long thought the world was against me, and that it was all pointless since I am a very small piece in an unbelievably large jigsaw puzzle. I also hear voices and see a pink fluffy albatros that follows me everywhere I go ...

:

Patrick you clever little whore -

You are more then clever enough to realize our crappy hardware (brains) will never be able to grasp these subjects! Leave that up to our evolution-honed descendants - go get drunk, get off and have a snack.

I guess you can relate real life instances with just about anything, especially music.

Oh the tides of symbolism.

Pat, this is what you wrote on my comments on my blog:

"I now have the utmost respect for you! Maybe you already knew this, but I am the proud (?) owner of the NKOTB Step by Step VHS, "complete with the video and interviews with all my favourite members of the group". Woop. Woop."

Yes, I am aware that you are the owner of the NKOTB Step by Step VHS. But I have a different video in my position. It is the actual "Cartoon Series" of NKOTB in a movie form. I have it in some filing cabnit as we speak. What is your mailing address, I am going to send it to you. I think it is time the video found a better home. I know you will treat the video with care. Plus, this is a VERY rare video and I think you would freak out if you seen it. MAILING ADDRESS NOW so I can send it like tomorrow.

Hey Pat,
I updated!

Actually there is one case in which entropy does not exist. Evolution. Life has gone fromm unorganized bits and pieces of elements to cells to animal and plant life. Animals evolve into a more organized state.
Not that that has anything to do with depression. I still kinda think life rocks though.

Welcome to talkback:

Ian - Yeah, I completely agree with you (except in your statement where you say the apparent rate of time depends on how much we have left. I'm of the opinion that it's based on how much has past, but I guess that wasn't really your main point...)! I was just trying to argue it from an objective stance. When it comes down to it, I don't particularly believe what I was writing on. It was more an exercise in logic than anything else. I'm not a pessimist, I swear.

Chris - No problem-O! Yeah, that bastard doesn't tend to word his opinions any other way. I'd hate to be in a debate against him...

MacGregor - Yeah, I heard that it's supposed to be a real awesome movie! I think I also heard that "What the #$*! Do We Know!?" is sort of on the same subject...

annie - Thanks! I aim to please... and cause cranial discomfort, I suppose. I hope the voices are earning their keep (possibly by provide valuable input at least occassionally), and thanks for commenting!

Lucas - Done and done! ... and done.

Fancy -
Part 1: ...no comment.
Part 2: OMG 265 Freshwater Rd, St. John's, NL, A1B 1B4 SEND SEND SEND! I love you, Fancy! I shall treasure it always and it would surely earn a place in my pop-culture nook, or at the very least, in my "New Kids on the Block" cranny. Please please please send???

brian - Good thought, but evolution is an example of order increasing locally. Entropy still decreases in the universe as a whole. Like I said, this concept is one of the laws of thermodynamics, which are a cornerstone of almost all branches of science...
