What the....?

I can't believe they've done this. I only caught the Now Show because of the podcast.

The thing you need to remember about the BBC and podcasting is that it's just a trial at the moment.

The reason for this is because of the way the Beeb is funded and regulated - basically they're not allowed to launch any full new services (unless its a short term trial) without a public service and commercial impact review by the BBC Trust.

As series finish they will be dropped from the BBC podcast list as well - until Podcasting has been through the full review.

I believe this is pretty close as the iPlayer has been authorised so by the end of the year ALL BBC shows (that don't contain music and are fully owned by the BBC) should be available to download.

The BBC Podcast trial was due to run for a set period of time and the shows authorised to be made available as podcasts needed to be broadcast (or at least have their series start) within that time frame.

The latest series of The Now Show has fallen just outside that frame.

You'll probably also have noticed that the only new podcasts launching are Video ones - thats because the BBC have moved on to a video podcast trial which will end fairly soon.

Okay, but it seems to me that because of the overwhelming success of the podcasts, the trial would just become a sort of phased out thing, just as the proverbial 'television trial' just became television etc.

You would think it would just phase into happening but unfortunately it can't.

All new broadcasting services (by the BBC) have to go through a three stage process.

1) Trial it for a year or so
2) Public Consultation and industry impact assesment
3) Decision from the Trust on whether it can go ahead or not.

The BBC High Definition TV service is going through the same process at the moment.

They launched a HD channel as part of a trial and it will be closing in a couple of months and won't come back until the Trust have said Yes or No and what form/restrictions it will face.

What this all does mean though is that when the trial (podcasting) is over Pretty much EVERY BBC speech based show will be made available as a podcast.

So more to come in the future.

The Now Show is once again available via podcast, and with The News Quiz added to boot. Time for an update to your rather scathing post, perhaps?
