I only recently found out how it works int he UK, and I was like: WTF! Even in The Netherlands we have a set period. Yes, once in a while our parlement "falls" and then we have an earlier election, but atleast there is a max period of time for every coalition.
Now, obviously we have more than 2 parties in NL too, so it makes more sense in that perspective too.
What usually happens is that a whole bunch of tweed-wearing Tories pop out and say "well, it's tradition!". The funny thing is that, if the polls are to be believed, tradition is going to screw them badly this time.
