I disagree -I think streaming does have a place. I like downloads for things that I know I like - I'll tend to grab whole series. But for exploration, for finding new things, or the time when I want to escape for a while, there's nothing on so lets see if there anything to do, I don't want to wait, I want to see it there and then.
In the US, I used both methods - I used the various services to watch all the new series to work out which ones I may take an interest in. for stuff like CSI - not for me something I want to waste download time and storage on - I tended to watch streamed as a way to timeshift the stuff, usually later the same night.
For my Dad, I introduced him to streaming, which he loves - it's EASY - they don't have to think about planning to get stuff, they search and there it is. That's why they use the Video on Demand (on cable) service instead of setting the recorder
