Totally agree with your story except for 1 thing: I want a domain to auto-renew as 99% of the time that is what I want every year. If a domain would auto-expire it would be such a hassle to renew them all by hand, right? But I agree that they might have send you the mail more like: it's going to be auto-renewed, are you sure?
I personally love my registrar: www.dds.nl It's in Dutch but I think the design shows you the clear difference between them and GoDaddy.
BTW: Why use GoDaddy? Isn't there even 1 other one that's better?

Yep, auto-renew is good and useful but it really needs to be well sign-posted.
The e-mails from GoDaddy are titled things like:
"GoDaddy Confirmed Expiration Notice"
When in fact they should be titled:
"______.com is going to expire on yyyy.mm.dd"
or, if they are going to auto-renew:
"______.com is going to be automatically renewed on yyyy.mm.dd"
The reason I use GoDaddy is just because they are cheap, and because they have an affiliate programme which a friend of mine has - so I use their code to register and make them a few dollars. Once I find a good replacement - and gandi.net is looking like a possibility here - I will be moving away quite soon.

Yahoo! Small Business meets your desiderata, Tom. Yahoo! Domain Hosting is cheap -- US$10 -- and simple to administer. No obnoxious solicitations.
However, Yahoo! Small Business Hosting sucks, in my opinion -- asleep at the wheel. I use SliceHost.com to host my sites.
By the way, for all its ghastly interface, and brain-damaged administrations, and its high prices -- US$35 -- Network Solutions has never lost or otherwise messed up the four domains I've had registered there for the last ten years. It is impossible to like Network Solutions, but a ten-year record of secure registration must count for something, considering the many awful stories which I have heard about cheaper registrars.
