" And, to be honest, who even uses Windows anymore? Most of the people I know only have a Windows install so they can see how badly IE 6 renders their standards-compliant (X)HTML and CSS or play DirectX games."

Everybody else. Those who don't have geeks as relatives, who use the PC as a tool to get things done as they need, either to write docs or go on the web. Most corporate environments.

You live in a particular community that aren't the 'norm'. Most people don't have that opportunity.

Tom,

You've articulated exactly what I thought when I read the "sky is falling" argument re. the internet. It *is* only that way due to the insecurity of Windows, and that is no fault of the Internet itself.

Cheers,

Tim

Thanks, Tim. And, Rachel, I was being a little bit silly. I still use Windows, for DirectX games, testing IE6 and generally finding new and exciting reasons why I prefer not to use Windows. ;)

I know you were using hyperbole, but I guess I'm sensitive to it. For example, in my field I can get the reaction 'no one reads blogs' to 'everyone has a blog and adds to the debate' when reality varies and is fluid depending on many factors. Projecting what 'you' do onto 'your' product customers, audience or whatever prevents you thinking about what your customers really do.
