I'm curious as to what the issues you're having with XP actually are. I say this, honestly, not as a baiting Mac vs PC kickoff, but because I use Windows for work all the time, and I think I must have become desensitised to it. I think that I may have become so used to it's various idiosynchracies that I've forgotten that using a computer doesn't have to be that way.

I'm also a little worried because I intend to buy a Macbook in the next three months or so, and the thought of having to learn a new OS and new ways of doing things kind of freaks me out.

I often hear Mac people talking about the differences between Mac OS X and XP etc, and I'm still struggling to work out what that magic bullet is that makes people get so excited over it.

I'm a writer, do occasional web stuff with wordpress, do bits and pieces of photography and surf the web a lot - what's a Mac going to do for me?

And what is killing your productivity Tom?

Just things like crashes, instability, spyware warnings. Worst of all has to be when I boot up and about ten programmes all want my attention - whether it's Skype wanting to download an update or my anti-virus software wanting to tell me about this wonderful new virus threatening to destroy my machine or Windows Update having a moan about something or other.

I'm not using Windows for much - I've got Firefox open, a text editor, iTunes and occasionally an FTP client. But little things like the lack of a command line annoys me. If my Mac freezes up, I grab my Palm Pilot hit a couple of commands in ssh and it's all free. My Mac can and does run for weeks without a reboot. If I don't reboot my PC every day (sometimes two or three times a day), it runs software with something of a whimper.

There isn't one thing though that makes the difference - no "magic bullet" as you say - just many, many small things that annoy me consistently enough to be a problem.

The last major "Windows Update" I d/d included something that makes my previously fine computer hang for two minutes when I turn it off. Can you put me through to someone in the "Fuck Off, You Wankers" department, please?
