Presumably the MySpace trend won't last _too_ much longer before people get bored and find something else. I don't want to imagine logging into my account in 20 years' time...

Sort of. A number of my readers use my blog as a daily newspaper replacement (strange as I find that), and so it's mostly pointing them in the direction of stuff that's interesting.
You are spot on about Brown though in drawing the analogy with Walden's 'new elites' model. I await Brown's premiership with about the same level of excitement I get when faced with eighties pop revivals or Madeleine Bunting's articles.
