Look at HTML. What got people to move towards web standards? Well, I'd like to think that the folks at the Web Standards Project were the reason - that abstract ideas sold them on moving to CSS and web standards. What actually happened is far more pragmatic - things like not having to maintain five versions of the page for different browsers and also getting higher up in the search engines.
If my solution sucks, make it better. If it is better, I'll advocate it. Until that happens, my less-than-perfect solution will have to do.
