The discussion around Loïc's reply and the issue itself is endless. I believe the interesting question is to figure out how to use what happened to organize a better conference next time. I agree with you there is no reason to consider such events as "dead" (it seems that "dead / not dead" is Loïc's preferred filter for analysing the world).
I have received some pretty interesting ideas in the comments of a post offering options for a better conference (http://blog.businessquests.com/2006/12/ web_conference_.html) and I think they are worth discussing. With your expertise and position I believe you could build on them...
