Wonderful idea.

Any reason why the RSS feeds are not updating last couple of days?

Thanks for thr good work,
Nico M

Nico M,
The system seems to be working fine. It's quite worrying when updates stop because it means one of two things:

(1) it's broken
(2) the Tubes are running okay

I will extend the script so that it emails me if it breaks down. Hopefully if updates don't happen for a day, it means that the Tubes are actually running okay - which would be a good thing.

But there are lines that are updating. The Northern line had an update about 8:18am this morning, and it seems to have got put through to the RSS feed.

Hi Tom -- Fantastic idea; well done! I Have subscribed to a number of your tube lines (District, Circle, Victoria, Piccadilly, Jubilee), but none of them seem to have updated in the past 7 to 9 days. I know the Tube "can" run flawlessly, but I haven't noticed it doing so for a while! Are your "Twitters" working OK at the moment? All the best, AlanLB.

Looks like TfL's site revamp has killed your screenscraper. That sort of thing is why my RSS / IRC scraper four years ago fell by the wayside. Ho hum.

Yep, Paul, got it. I'm working on a new one. Just been a bit busy with work.

Hi Tom! I'm in London for a few days, and subscribed to the Tube Twitters -- waiting anxiously for you to get them back up and running!

Tom: how about making each of the TwitterTubes follow the others? Like that by looking at one "and friends" I can see them all when needed, and just keep subscribing to my regular ones.

Stephanie: Yep, I'll be doing that once Twitter starts working again...

Great idea. I had a look at Dapper and a Dapp for London Underground Alerts already exists. From that it took a minute to create a gadget for iGoogle.

I wish I'd thought of this months ago - it is invaluable.

Doesn't seem to be working no updates since 7 June???

Hi Tom,

I'm missing the tube updates ... will they start working again. Presumably this is TfL's issue and not twitter's?

DS, it looks like the script isn't getting the data from TfL. There are rumours afoot that TfL will be providing a data source quite soon for Tube problems. I'm waiting until they say whether or not this is so before I rewrite the script. In the meantime, this means that updates may not be happening or may be sporadically available. Sorry about that.

That said, there has been lots of reports that Twitter's API has been ropey recently, so it could be that too...

The northern line tweets the same thing over and over without checking for a status change.

Still don't know why people would want to use twitter for stuff like this. Best to use xmpp and Instant messaging as we all run gtalk/jabber on our phones these days.

sdaweq: That's because the parser is broken.

As for why to use Twitter? Because people use it. I've certainly never installed Jabber on my phone. Even if I did, it would be a J2ME application which I would have to boot up and pay a service charge on, while getting SMS is free.

This is very useful, but unfortunately broken! :( Will it be fixed?

I'd like to fix it, but it's low on my list of priorities at the moment.
