Yes, exactly. For the vast majority of people, there is no more need for a big Word-like application. OpenOffice is impersonating the wrong software. Both OpenOffice and Word fail as academic writing software - that's why I prefer LyX and BibTex, combined with an accompanying outliner to plan my document in. Word is too big for the simple documents most people need to write, but too small for the big documents that I need to write. In LaTeX, we've got a superb piece of software that just needs someone like GOogle to make it more usable.
