Good post and I agree with you. All these widgets are a good attempt at making it somewhat easier for naive uses to add functionality to their web page, primarily blogs, I have been experimenting on mine but they do slow down the page - unless you have broadband and dont pay for bandwidth. They are not visible on handheld devices and eat up valuable bandwidth when you are using GPRS/3G that you have to pay for. I still like just to see the raw text as that is the only real content I am interested in. Multimedia can wait for when I am on my PC.

The problem is that everyone wants to push multimedia especially the phone operators as they need to generate revenues to pay off their overpriced network licenses. So if they had any sense they would be working hard to make sure all this javascript loaded on your phone as this is more revenue for them. Of course as consumers we want to pay as little as possible...
