I have a hard time understanding this, too. With anti-US sentiment so high there, do we really need to be in Germany anymore? Or South Korea?
I thought we were developing a "faster, lighter" military so that we don't have to stay in these locations.

Seems like we are buring the candle at both ends, huh?
I'm going to do a little research, when I get some time, but I'm not positive that Pres. Bush or the Pentagon announced that we would pull ALL US military forces out of Germany and East Asia or was the announcement that SOME forces would be redeployed to bases in the US.
I also recently read an article that stated that DoD was looking to consolidate US Special Operations forces in Europe at one base in Spain or another country (I can't remember which).
Appears there are some irreconcilable differences without more information.
However, I would add my 2 cents: strategically we do not want to completely abandon all presence in Europe or Asia. Sure we can deploy some forces quickly to just about anywhere, but to put together a big fighting force takes time, airlift/sealift and a long logistics tail unless we already have some troops and equipment forward placed.
