It seems that Governors of states have the experience that the voters like. If you can run a state for a few terms without pissing off your citizens, you could probably do a good job on a bigger scale.

You're spot on about a bunch of stuff here Toni. McCain hasn't fooled any conservatives and lost his best chance at the nomination in 2000. Score 2 for you with "Senators don't win Presidential races".

You win races by firing up your partisan base, destroying your opponent on the stump and in the debates, and offering the partisans in the opposing camp a reason to stay home. The swing voters will swing how ever they swing, you can't campaign on them or pander to them.
