Your SE (Spreadsheet Expert) may be anticipating the noise your flyswatter makes when it 'thwacks' a bug. My mother used to use a rolled up newspaper to swat bugs, and our dogs would hide when they saw her rolling one, even though she never swatted the dogs.

BB-she hates any loud noise or slapping noise. If I whack a mosquito on my arm she slinks away. And as your mother, I've never whacked so it's something innate with her screwed up dna.
