When I was in Lebannon in 1983 the Long Beach (Ca) newspaper sent out a specially printed weekly edition to our ship, so we could keep up with the news. Too bad that kind of media is gone.

My family is associated with the local VFW, which every two months brings in the ambulatory wounded for some r&r away from Walter Reed. Each of the men with whom I've spoken tell me that dealing with morale is a big problem--largely because of the media's constant hammering about "the wrong reasons for going to Iraq." All of them say that the American public just doesn't understand the good which the military have done and continue to do over there. And most of these men want to go back!
Last week, at one of the VFW gatherings, I had occasion to speak to an Afghan tribal who had been wounded when saving two lives in our Special Forces. His words: "It's 80% safer in Afghanistan now" and "Your media don't tell you the truth."
I'll be out of town for Thanksgiving, but my cousin, who is the president of the Ladies' Auxilliary at the local VFW, will be inviting all the available ambulatory wounded whom she can fit into her house for Thanksgiving with a family. We need more citizens like my cousin and fewer like the peaceniks who demonstrate outside Walter Reed every single Friday. What the local VFW and my cousin are doing can make a difference for these military men and women. I've seen the faces, up close and personal.
