- comparison to Singapore for sub-Saharan Africa, vision came from the president of Rwanda, Paul Kagame
center of medicine, banking and technology
- 770 million people, expected to double in the next 50 years
- slums
pavers, neighborhood water taps, biogas [transform sewage into cooking oil] systems
- 'pro-poor' planning = gist is who is this city for?
- needs basic infrastructure as well as big picture
- overpopulation seen as one of the complex causes of the genocide, the battle over land population growth is outstripping food production
- rapid urbanization
- country is landlocked
- new airport - suck out all resources for concrete in the whole country
- undertone of genocide in everyone
- 20,000 12 year olds that were conceived from rapes during the genocide
- "Urban planning is an optimistic act."
