I don't know why anyone would be deluded about Gainey's ability when it comes to aquiring talent through trades. Huet was a horrible trade. A 2nd rounder for a guy who put the Caps on his back and took them into the playoffs (that's right, Huet, not Ovechkin is the reason they made it). Laraque is a piss poor trade, not because the Habs don't need toughness because the series against Philadelphia should have proven that without a shadow of a doubt, but because the man can't skate nearly well enough to keep up with Montreal's style of play. Oh dear. Maybe there's hope to woo Demitra or Jager or maybe even Sakic. He still need to sign Gorges and O'Byrne and probably need a replacement for Streit more so than another big name forward.

Gravatar Hear, hear Jay.

We could aim to replace Streit. But it has to be said that getting someone the calibre of Sakic, Sundin or Jagr would improve the team no matter where they get deployed.

How about Federov for the point?

as for improving in areas we need to. Goalscoring (under pressure) is a glaring hole. Satan is gone now,so I'll stop on about that. Leaves me with Selanne...

Gravatar Teemu Selanne, depending on the price, wouldn't be a bad idea. I don't know if Mark Recchi has it in him still, although he didn't have a bad second half last year in Atlanta. I don't know if Dmitri Kalinin or Teppo Numminen have been signed yet but could be valuable D-Men in what I figure is Montreal's weakest link. If we were looking for grit, I would have went after Owen Nolan over Laraque. Nolan wouldn't take away from the Habs offensive flair so much. Peter Forsberg is still out there as well. I know, injury prone, but depending on the price, might be worth it. Michael Peca is another guy we could have went for to add grit to the team. Again, a better player than Laraque. Brad Ference is still there. Ladislav Nagy is still there. Jaroslav Modry and Jason Smith are available from the Flyers. Smith would be a grand pick up for D. Sandis Ozolinsh could help the pp as well and I agree that Fedorov, for the right price, would fit in well with the Habs. We've missed a lot of the marquee players already (I'll believe Sundin will be a Hab when I see it) but there's still some useful players out there that would help us win the cup this year.
