Yup, the shootout is bs - to my mind it is not hockey rather a gimmick that supposedly adds some drama and flair to the product but instead is a boring insult to the game and the fans. It is a separate portion of the spectacle that enables a team to acquire an extra point but to say it settles the issue is, I think, simply not true. The game ended in a tie and team X won a bonus point in the following circus act.
