Changing URLs is definitely the last thing that I would like to do for my website.301 is the only way to handle that and even then there's no surety that the SEs would be able to handle the redirection properly.
Its better if you can avoid doing such a URL change

I recently did this.. I had multiple blogs running, and I put them all into my main blog. The reason was simple: manageability. I was unable to manage all the blogs at the same time. Comment spam is annoying enough on one, but to have to check every blog every day was too much.
While I may go down SEO wise, (which with the redirects I haven't seen a difference actually), going up in quality will help in the long run.. Better to do it now than later..

Seriously, I do not see any reason why you would like to change the current url to a subdomain of your website. You may save some hosting fee? I don't know, but DON'T do you, you will lose your SE traffic.

This is a great topic of conversation. In fact, there was a discussion about domain length and subdomain issues earlier this week at WebProWorld- URL http://www.webproworld.com/viewt...ic.php?

If the content is published to a third level domain, and all the internal link references are relative rather than fully qualified URLs, transitioning to a new sub-domain structure is easier. (I think) all you would have to do is to implement a 301 redirect from the root of the old domain. It takes some time, but Google will translate your "link love" to the new location. The other advantage to this approach is that Google sees a third level domain as a separate site from the www. one. Although it doesn't make sense to go into details here, just imagine "owning" more than two spots in a serp...
