Toya what happened to your UK Chart watch posts?
I like Miss Independant, but as I heard Forget About Me by Little Bit months ago this doesn't sound fresh and original to me.
Can't wait for the album though!

I HATE Ne-Yo, His Character and cockyness stops me from liking his music, otherwise the track is aite ....just not him singing it, I'd have truly loved it if Lloyd Did it

'Closer' never grew on me. I despise that song. I think this song is ok, better than 'Closer.' However, this isn't enough to push people to buy his record.

I used to really like Ne-Yo but his overall cockiness, his bullshit remarks about the gay stuff and his comments about Queen Rihanna have put him in my doghouse. Woof punk bitch!

I really like this song. It's the same old shit: the Stargate sound, with the harp, the lyrics of being sprung and shit. But I do like it. I don't think it's a good second single though. More like a third.
Ne-Yo's albums always tail off after one single anyway, so I doubt it'll matter.

Failure (at least for you, Ne-Yo). He just keeps upping his *suspect* game, sorry to say.
This song left absolutely no impression on me. Other male singers have taken this concept and at least attacked it with some passion. Not Ne-Yo. That's too much. I also LOVE when the verse of a song blends seamlessly into the bridge which blends seamlessly into the chorus...*rollseyes*
Something inside me hates to be so mean to him but, at this point, it's hard to find something to compliment him on. Honestly, "Miss Independent" will get very little radio play and will surely hurt the sales of his album. "Closer" is the only song he's released/leaked so far that has an ounce of excitement, charisma, or complexity attached to it (which is why I like it a lot). Yet, like the first singles off his previous records, the remainder of the album is slated to, of course, be material not worthy of existence.
All I want to know is what is Ne-Yo trying to accomplish with this direction? What keeps this and all these other gutless songs he's released from "Year Of The Gentleman" going straight to music Hell with Trey Songz and Ray J's material? Ne-Yo must be in total denial that, musically, he's only a step above them. The only difference is his music isn't straight-up embarrassing; it's just pretty much unimportant and unproductive to music in general. I don't know which is worse, actually.
Maybe next time (but probably not).

Oh yeah! And Toya...I'm with you on "Closer" being a grower. Have you heard it in the clubs!? It sounds BIG! It was when I heard it knock in the club that I started liking the song.
Year of the gentleman will sell well on its first day, but the following week; sales will decline faster than Aretha Franklin's titties in a halter neck. That's always the way with his albums. Plus, he talks about trying to change R&B, but his shit sounds the same and like every other n***a's shit on the radio. Mainly because Stargate be passing his sound around like Jennifer Freeman at TUG entertainment. Plus dudes songs be lacking the lyrical creativity of many of the ladies songs these days.
Unlike Trey Songz and Ray J, Ne-Yo will always have a career because of his songwriting. Plus, he always manages to get at least one big hit from each of his albums, which is more than Trey and Ray have managed to muster between the two of them.

Random, Ray J's career has lasted almost as long as Brandy's, and he has just as many albums in roughly the same time span.

Hey J...ummm...
#1. I think you are agreeing with me, right?
#2. I'm not sure if your post was a response to me but I thought I'd respond back regardless...
Yes, Ne-Yo is a songwriter and will have always have a career but (this is if you were replying directly to me) I never said either of these things weren't true.
I was looking at Ne-Yo from a musical standpoint which, IMO, is a totally separate (and more negative) outlook. Yes, Ne-Yo has hits but in the grand scheme of things, I'd go so far as to say that only a handful of those really stood out from the genre he is targeting ("Sexy Love", "Because Of You", "Closer") and that is because the arrangement and production of those songs are both refreshing, for Ne-Yo AND Stargate. When he gets it right, I like the results a lot. When he gets it wrong, however, and it happens again and again, I begin to doubt his capabilities as an artist.
All I've consistently heard from Ne-Yo are unimpressive lyrics, lackluster, repetitive, production and so-so melodies (which are usually compromised because of his small singing range). A couple songs he'll do will be pleasant surprises while the next 5 I hear will have me wishing I was listening to someone else.
His career has been sufficiently built on hype since he came out of the shadows with "So Sick". This is definitely a double-edged sword because the quality of his output, overall, seems to be getting weaker with every album and I think the public's excitement is decreasing along with that.
He needs to start surprising listeners but seems to be avoiding that action like the plague (ironic since he actively works with the moment's most successful one-trick ponies, Stargate), for reasons I don't know. I stay giving dude the benefit of the doubt but I hate being disappointed damn near EVERY time!
