Mariah and Whitney in their heyday were unparalleled and without peer even among vocalists that preceded and followed them.
I fell in love with Mariah's the very instant I heard her sing live. It's like her voice soars to stratospheric heights, effortlessly belting those high notes without sounding forced. The melismas and the whistle register, were mere icing on the cake for me.
What Whitney lacked in vocal range, she made up for with an intensely solid voice from the lowest to the highest note she can hit.
Both started out as "vocal perfection personified". They did not have to grow and develop their vocal prowess -- they were the shit from the get-go. You can't say that to about any other singers.
From then, until now, no one has even come close to touching these vocal powerhouses. Many decades from now, they will be remembered fondly for this, and not at the dusk of their careers.

To all of the people who are saying Mariah has nothing to prove ~ As avid fans of Mariah why wouldn't you want her to always put forth her greatest effort? Just because she's a legend she can put out shitty music and expect us to buy into it? I've loved Mariah from day 1 (literally) and I'm completely disappointed with her latest lack of effort. I own every one of her albums but I don't own E=MC2. Because Mariah is so great (in my mind), I was expecting great things from her this time around and she just didn't deliver.
I realize that some of you think this is her greatest album to date, but not everyone agrees with you on that. Nothing to get all angry about or anything.
As for seeing her in concert, I'd never waste my money. When I pay for a concert, I want to see a show, not Mariah prancing around stage in her panties and bra (ala her last tour).
for those of you who don't know yes it will sound different because artist will go back in the studio and make a raw recording which is different from the digitally mastered tracks which appear on the album, so that it does sound different. BUt yes it is still moving her lips to a pre-recorded track AKA beyonce...lol...but hey they all do it. It is what artist do these days so can't fault her for it.
Mia: Why dont you like it? That's my biggest issue with the people who dont like this album; they can't say why, I guess I'm too curious and always need reasoning, so can you break it down. Vocally, its not powerbelting on everything but that's not new and I find her layering and backing vocals interesting, lyrically its her personality and arguably more real, and melodically she brought it back and I just vibe with it and the vocals and lyrics dont annoy me at times (leared to tune JD out long ago, LOL.)

DRB... I feel the same EXACT way as Mia. I'm been a Mariah fan since I was old enough to even know who she was. I am a huge Mariah Carey fan, and I too own every album of hers. And it makes me sick when the Curtis' and Roy's of the world go off and insult people and shit just because a fan of Mariah's doesn't like the album. I don't know if you are in that group with them, and whether or not you act the same as they do, but I simply do not understand it.
Part of being a true fan is wanting that artist to always put forth their best. Why would we expect anything less? Jay-z is my favorite rapper, and when he put out a weaker effort, I was always the first to call it out and put it on front street. Doesn't make Jay less of a rapper, or less of an artist... it's just me being honest.
Everything Mariah does is not going to be flawless. She is not using any drop of her talent right now, and she's pretty much just wasting mine and everyone elses time right now. Mariah is the worst lip synchrr on the planet and when she lips the whole song, its obvious. As for camera angles, all the cameras were in the air and at the back. Her voice on the day before was worse but that doesn't mean it can't get better; like her breast size, her voice is weird and unpredictable. I thought she sounds sock when she did TMB and wiped her nose, but she was fine the day before. On this she sounded sick. All the little adlibs and her little hand to ear gestures and my ears tell me its live.
As for TEOM, I still think its overrated. Lyrically it was repetitive, the choruses and verses on a lot weren't up to her usual par. Lack of bridges. The vocals seemed strained in a Loy of places and annoying at times. If I listen to that album, I have to put my mind in a certain place for it. I can never just turn it on and say I love it. In 2005, I did, but as 2006 as and the era died down, I didnt like it anymore and it didnt have a timeless or a even long lifespan. Even im 2005, I coulbt listen too much without starting to get tired of it, I'd go back to Butterfly, Daydream, or her debut. See I can justify why I dont like that album but I get annoyed when people say garbage and nothing else. I know people dont need to explain themselves, but it bugs me out.

Seeing a video in you tube not always help us to see whether the artist lipsynched or not. She doesn't seem to be singing most part of it, but the video quality is not great. But I loved the performance anyway. She still has it.
@ DRB ~ For me to consider an album a success, I have to like a majority of the songs on the album. For me, Mariah just didn't deliver this time.
Migrate ~ I'll probably never like anything T-Pain is on.
Touch My Body ~ I'm just not feeling it, lyric wise. The video didn't help either.
Cruise Control ~ Could these lyrics get anymore immature?
I Stay In Love ~ This is an ok ballad. I think it's kinda boring. I'm not sure if that's a result of the tempo or the monotone that she sings in.
Side Effects ~ Definitely one of the best songs on the album. Mariah makes you feel her pain. When I hear this song, I think it's sad that she's let Tommy have all of this control over her life even though they've been divorced for years.
I'm That Chick ~ While the lyrics are undeniably stupid, something about this song just grabs me. This is another one that I really enjoy.
Love Story ~ I love the 30 second snippet when I first heard it. The full version? Not so much. It's definitely a filler.
I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time ~ I love this song from beginning to end. Like Random said, it sounds like there's 50 Mariah's up in the studio recording this song. It's a good sound for her.
Last Kiss ~ Forgettable filler.

Heat ~ The first 24 seconds of this song had me thinking it was gonna be so hot. Then the music changes are Mariah comes with more stupid lyrics.
When you look at it, I really only like 4 songs out of 16. To me that's a failure. Especially when I've enjoyed all of her other albums, give or take a couple of songs. I think I gave this album an ample chance too, in case it was a grower. I gave it two weeks, but it never grew on me. When I first heard the leak, I was literally disappointed. I was like "I've been all hyped up over this?"
You and I aren't going to agree on this one. I've explained why I don't care for the album. If listening to it for 2 weeks straight doesn't make me like it, neither is someone (who really enjoys it) trying to talk it up to me. It is what it is.
I got you now. I just wanted a reason. The only song that had to grow on me was Last Kiss, which I love now. I'm suprised you think T4N is filler and IWYW but whatever. I disagree with what you said, but we already knew that. Lyrically, she can be the untouchable songwriting queen when she wants to be, same melodically. She just put her youthful personality and fun into it, which I appreciate. You gave it a chance, so its cool.
