Gravatar Have a read of The Da Vinci Code or Angels and Demons by Dan Brown. Both these books opened my eyes to the science vs religeon debate.

Gravatar its frightening to think of the things being done in the name of religion. i'd hope that jesus, if he even existed, wasn't as big a fuckwit as the people who claim to live by his words today.

oh, and i hate bumperstickers too, btw. nothing like decorating a 40k car with a 50 cent sticker.

Gravatar I've been reading a book on the Gnostic Gospels, which were found in the 50's in Egypt. Most of them read like Buddha wrote them, I swear. The trade route to China was open back then and nobody knows what Jesus did between the ages of 12 and 33, so some scholars suggest Jesus was hanging out with Buddhist monks. The Gnostic gospels talk about how salvation comes from the inside, from self knowledge.

The scariest thing about fundie Christians to me is not necessarily that they're always right. It's that they do believe the rest of us are sinners and that we need to be saved before the rapture. They believe they are at war with evil and we are hapless sheep who need them to save us. I think they need some goddamn therapy and self knowledge.

Gravatar Hi, there. Long time reader, first time commenter ;o)

The trouble with fundamentalists is they take every word as true and don't stop to question it, look at the bigger picture. But the Bible and all other religious texts, however devine thier source may claim to be, have to as some point be written down and edited by people, which is where it all falls appart.

Example; In the original Hebrew texts of the New Testement, Josephs missus was never described at a virgin, only ever as a 'young woman' That particular miracle occured when it was translated into Greek.

Oh and the early Catholic church completely deleted and entire Gospel. That according to Mary. And re-packaged her as a half-mad prostitute. Well not completely deleted, because its been pieced back together, I somehow doubt it'll ever find its way back in tho.

Religion, you gotta love it!

Gravatar Fundamentalists of any stripe scare the shit out of me. The news coming out of the states has been interesting. The South has decided to put disclaimer stickers in school science books. "Evolution is a theory without evidence and should be carefully and critically considered." Nice eh?

I believe there was a guy named Jesus. He hung out with whores, thieves and traitors. He drove the tax collectors out of the temple. The evangelical Christians got it all fucking backwards - they actually believe that God rewards his faithful with cash. I could rant forever. :|

Gravatar You forgot the Creationists! That group of supposed scholars who insist the earth was created in 6 days (with one day of rest) despite mountains of evidence to the contrary. I asked a minister/friend once if he thought it was possible that the earth was created but not literally in 6 days. He said no because if one part of the bible was wrong that would throw the whole thing into question. Heaven forbid.

He was at a loss to tell me why Christians are selective about what parts of the bible they take literally and which ones they freely ignore. He didn't have a convincing reason and he seems content to keep his head up his own ass. Who was I to burst his bubble?
