Talking is fine but do it w/someone you can trust. I totally agree with you about the negative view it causes though, so becareful who you do it with. A confidant is a great thing, maybe one of your better friends can fill this role?
I've had similar situations occur in the past, and I just looked at it as a learing experience about who to trust and who not to. By the way though really becareful about what you tell your family unless you want to make sure that your boyfriend always feels uncomfortable to be around them. Stuff you tend to forgive and forget, your family will tend to cling on to because they want to protect you and keep you from harm. So unless it is REALLY something that you want them to know about, think twice about. You don't want them judging him based on something you most likely won't hold against him after the crisis has passed. Either way good luck
Take care,
Sid
PS I read your comment on the soldier article and I came here to say Bravo!

I don't think I ever had a situation where my friends ever thought positively of anyone I was dating anyway. Most of the friends I'd have talked to in school were girls and they never thought anyone was "good enough."

I think everyone I know who's in a relationship has issues whether they talk about them or not. It's only a problem if bitching behind the other person's back is a substitute for confronting the issue.
