ha, who knows? Van Gogh was crazy! in his later years he painted less and less people in his landscape works because he resented them and couldn't get along with them. (he would still paint portraits for money, tho). it's largely thought that in his early work he was more literal, painting peasants and farm workers and trying to capture the simple beauty of the rural life. later, figures show up less frequently and become shadowy and ephemeral -- often interpreted as a reflection of his own disassociation and illness.
