Forgive me for hoping that your mum was FLASHED back in the 40s, and not slashed!
Hi Despairing. Thanks for letting me know about the typo, and yes, my Mum was indeed flashed. Spent 4 happy years in Edinburgh and hope all is well there. 
I'm lucky enough to now live in a village where the kids are pretty much free range, go scrabbling about in the hedgerows and ditches, climbing trees etc. (I have two lads, who both seem to love getting very muddy!) You have to let them go and have a little freedom. We are very, very fortunate where we are now after living in a town where the dangers were more from nasty kids, than falling out of trees. I do drum into my two about stranger danger and they are aware that there are dodgy people about, but they now have the sort of childhood I had. If you wrap them up too much, they'd spend all their time indoors being gooners on pc or gaming consoles.
Life is a risk and kids have to learn something by themselves otherwise they'd all end up sitting inside to frightened to go out!
