Actually I know a couple, but you would not know them because they are not media whores like the Goreacle, Edwards, Streisand or Whoopie! The rank and file Dems, for the most part, walk the walk.

Speaking of walking the enviro walk...Ed Begley Jr. He is most definately NOT a hypocrite when it comes to this.

LL

Daryl Hannah would be another.

As would a fella that "knew" daryl well - Jackson Browne.

I went looking and found Larry Hagman too.
I did see Ed on NG or a channel similiar and you are correct. He is definitely walking the walk.
Too bad they aren't getting the press.
I wonder how many rank and file dems are driving SUVs and living in big houses or older energy hog houses in the urban areas. I seriously doubt the majority are any more energy concious than rightwingers.

I'll bite. Tell me how I'm a hypocrite.

I was actually going to point to your winter bike riding as an exception, jeffk. I should have written it differently as I realize many young liberals are very idealistic though IMO somewhat misguided.

Wow. Thanks, I think.

Now that it snowed, though, I've been taking the bus. The salt is just hell on my bike. I may get a single-speed junker for this purpose because my bike commute is about 8 minutes and bus is 15-20.

This is what I mean....rank and files like Jeff, do walk the walk. Whether it is riding/bussing to work (the Logicial Husband takes the bus to his downtown job too), to installing energy effecient lights/heating (as we have done in the Casa) to turning down the heat during the day (64 frigid degrees in the Casa during the day) average Americans are making conscious Conservation decisions. Meanwhile folks like the Goreacle and Babs tell us we have to give up more while they give up nothing...and wonder why we give them the finger!

LL

I would take the bus if I could. I have a bunch of books to read and after the 2 hr commute the other night it would be a relief to let someone else do the driving. For many of us it is not an option and never will be.
I did opt to purchase the most efficient furnace on the market but to be honest it is also the most reliable and that drove the decision as much as energy conservation.

BTW How many times have you wiped out riding in this crap?

It's like driving; you get used to it. I have a nice route that's on a path most of the way. I still avoid the worst days. Thing is, as much as we think of winters here as "cold" and "snowy", they're much more of the former than the latter; it really only snows maybe once a week on average. Then as soon as it's plowed, you're just dealing with the cold, which can be dressed for.

Jeff...can I assume that you have either a Mtn bike or some sort of hi-bred?

Do you put special tires on?

My usual summer bike is a "touring"-style bike, which is a bit obscure. It looks like a road bike a first glance, but it's a shade longer, more upright, tougher, and has hybrid-style tires, which are a bit wide but smooth.

A mountain bike works in the winter, although the salt chews through the 21+ gears they typically have. The real hardasses ride a single-speed road bike with tires than are narrow yet knobby - half way between a mountain bike and road bike tire. I'd like to get one of these eventually.

Are you talking about a cyclecross bike?

I have a buddy in Portland that does that semi-professionally, and it is just INSANE what they can do with those bikes!

Let me try to find one of his videos and I'll share it with you.

Don't forget to ask him what kind of pants he wears, Brent.

Those cyclocross guys are nutty. I think the style of tires typically found on a cyclocross bike work well in the winter, but most cyclocross bikes I've seen aren't single-speed.

Kermit, I have ArcTeryx synthetic shell pants I wear over my jeans. Since I know you're dying to know.

Kermit...I mean this in the nicest way possible.

Fuck off.

Jeff...I think Kermit might pee in his pants a bit if he were to know how much those things cost....

Really? Tell him Saturday night!

Suddenly he's Mr. Sensitive.

They're cheap compared to a Humscalade.

You can't throw out a word like "Humscalade" without attaching a link.
No telling what someone around here is likely to come up with.

Eh there's no link. It's from an old Daily Show joke. Jon Steward says something to the effect of, "Yeah, I drive a hybrid. It's half Hummer, half Escalade. I call it my Humscalade."

Schweinhund...if you don't know what a "Humscalade" is, no link is going to help you.

Maybe if you said it out loud...sound it out...you MIGHT be able to figure it out without GOOGLE.

You were talking about spandex pants and bikes. I missed the shift to imaginary vehicles conjured up on a show I never watched by a guy I don't care for.

Sorry pig/dog but here it is
