Maxx makes a great point. This is trying to make some rhetorical distinction versus the actual tactical and strategic victorys.

The intellectually honest observer knew this even before Bush's declaration.

And Bush was correct then. Saddam's armed forces had been defeated. The vaunted republican guard had been cooked in their armor or walked off the battlefield. The insurgency that followed due to a lack of proper after battle planning was a disaster and allowed the defeatists in this nation to rail against the admin and the troops thus encouraging our enemies, instead of rolling up their sleeves and becoming part of the solution to crush them and help the Iraqis. I have never been so ashamed of the left. At least not since the 70's.
