Clearly there's a space just to the left of the presidential digit that's indicitive of a folded over finger. If it were his thumb, that space wouldn't be there and the line of his thumb would continue straight down to his wrist. Same if it were his index finger. Go ahead and try it with your own hand!
It should also be noted that the length of the digit in question appears longer than one would expect a thumb to be for any but a knuckle-dragging simian.

If this were an isolated incident, he might be worthy of the benefit of the doubt, but W's middle digit has a histroy of flippage as evidenced in the following links:

Let me say that my middle digits have probably had more than their share of "airtime", but I'd like to think I've grown past that. I'm not angry with the president over this, actually I got a chuckle out of it. But as the one who promised to "bring honor back to the White House", I happen to believe our President, our "Head of State", the "Leader of the Free World" should display a little more decorum. And maybe, just maybe...a little bit of class.
Sorry, look at the angle of the fist and wrist, it's a thumb although it could pass for a middle finger. The distortion in length is do to a factor not at all uncommon in video and vid caps.

Go ahead and extend your right thumb. Fold the rest of the fingers on your right hand across your palm, and hold your hand high. Turn it to any angle you wish, and you still won't see the space to the left of your thumb that is exhibited in the images of the "First Finger".
Try the same exercise with both your index finger and your "Bird" finger. Again turn your hand to any angle you wish. You will observe that the only instance you will see a space to the left of your finger is when you extend the finger Bush is accused of extending.
When you say that the "distortion in length is do(sic) to a factor not at all uncommon in video and vid caps" are you saying it's all an optical illusion? Is the space to the left of W's finger also an optical illusion?
Look at it this way: When was the last time the White House press corps yelled anything at "W" that he found anytwhere close to worthy of a presidential "Thumbs Up"?
I will suggest to you that "W" is ballsy enough to flip off the press corps, but at the same time he lacks the intestinal fortitude to cop to it.
