Gravatar I think it will be fun to have a little girl to dress all cute, but i will keep her looking like a little girl, not a teenager!! Time with little ones already flies by, no point in rushing it more!

Gravatar Um, Nate, as the father of two little girls, let me tell you how hard it is to find decent clothes for little girls. DAMN hard! I would like to take the designers of this stuff and shoot them, but then again, they wouldn't make this trash if parents didn't buy it.

There is a movement amongst our Mormon friends to provide a line of decent, modest, and stylish clothes for girls. I only saw this on TV, I don't know how well they're doing.

I call all those made-up little girls "Jon-Benets".

Gravatar Astro,
I can't speak about where you are.. but here.. there are cute little girl clothes all over. There is trash to be sure, but my wife is dying to have a little girl... and seeing adorable little dresses and stuff is not helping.

Gravatar Astro, there is tons of cute girl clothes out there, try HannaAndersson.com for great playdresses for girls. I love there stuff and it washes up so nice. When I was a nanny the little girls I took care of lived in this stuff. Also, gymboree has great girls clothes that looks like little girls.

Nate, Here's one for ya - Target sells thongs for 5 year olds!!!!! Are you kidding me?!

Gravatar Thong. yes. I saw that. I went to the bathroom after I saw it in fact. I thought I was gonna be ill. As soon as I saw it.. I just thought.. pedafile.

Gravatar Fortunately, my older two have cousins who are several months older than them, and of the right gender, so we get a lot of their hand-me-downs. My sister-in-law bought her daughter several of those Land's End dresses, which are really cute, as well as other cute stuff.

We can find good clothes, but Target and Kohl's and Meryvn's, and even Wal-Mart are filled with the trashy clothes for little girls.

Gravatar Those little girls you speak of are "Tarts In Training." Did anyone see the article on WND about the 11 year old girl who wrote to Nordstroms asking for less trampy clothes. Apparently they will be offering them this fall. Some commentator in the article believes that less revealing clothes are the next hot trend this fall.

Gravatar For clothes for my 2 girls (ages 9 and 4), when we went shopping for shorts for them the inseams were about 1 inch long. We finally went to the boys dept for board shorts (we called it the athletic clothing dept) in order to find summer clothes that were modest. My wife was about ready to buy material and patterns and make their shorts (on top of 12 hr shifts and 2-3 hr commute). I guess I need to learn to sew if present trends continue.

Gravatar I went shopping with my dad this morning - as a favor to my mom - and passing by the kiddie and teen stuff I was horrified. All of the skirts for girls were barely long enough to cover one's behind. And all of the shorts had been hung up with the waist band folded over. It looked like Ho Central!

I guess I'm going to have to learn to sew before I have kids.

Gravatar My girls:

1. VE - 10½

2. GF - 8½

3. VR - 3½

All dress in clothes very similar to the clothes at the link SpaceBunny provided. NO tart-in-training clothes here.

However, the eldest, VE, is a bit of a Tom-Boy (she can't help it being 5'5" and in the 4th grade) and likes pants.

GF, is 4'8", is the girly-girl and wanted Mommy's lipstick at 11 months. She is whom we watch out for when picking clothes. In addition, she is a ham-bone.

VR, is 3’8”, and is a bit of both, but leans toward the girly side.

All three are very independent, but they youngest, VR is the most like me...

Gravatar This discusion reminds me of the SNL joke-ad they did this season for "New Huggies Thongs!"

Mom 1: "Do they hold as much as regular diapers?:
Mom 2: "No, but they look *great*!"

Gravatar Nate, perhaps you know more about this than I do. I just can't imagine the tomfoolery that could be behind dressing up girls like - well, what better way to say it - like women and sometimes I'd say like sex objects.

Am I just assuming too much of people? There is a little something called 'common sense'..do people have that anymore?

Gravatar I'm a barbie girl,
in a party world,
dressed in plastic,
so fantastic..
[something] in my hair,
undress me as we share

Ok, I screwed up the lyrics, but it was so obviously fitting...

Gravatar Sarah...

Common Sense is about as common as a 3 dollar bill.

Gravatar Haha @ Nate.
I wish so dearly *one* girl at my high school (2k people) would on occasion not wear pants. Fashion bugs me so much. Being fashionable means looking like a tart.

Gravatar Hi Hamster,
It's late and I'm so tired, but I can't believe my computer allowed me to access the comments, so I wished to say "Good on ya, my brother!"

You stories are the very best of you. I enjoy them greatly.

I was just sitting here counting my stacks of three dollar bills. My dad gave them to me. Bless that man.

I suppose you have a stash of your own. Julie give them to you, or did you come with a dowry of your own?

Well,Good night, sleep tight little Jeb(long off to bed). Goodnight Moon.

Gravatar Yeah, my ex dresses my 10yr old like that. Not a thing I can do about it except buy decent clothes and hope she wears 'em.

Gravatar I can tell that I'm getting old. When I was young I'd ogle the young women in revealing clothes. Now I say to my wife, "Oooh, BAD fashion choice", or "Does her mother know she's out dressed like that?"

Gravatar "Target sells thongs for 5 year olds!!!!! Are you kidding me?!"

When I first read this SpaceBunny, I was thinking: what is wrong with that? Get em some 'ginger' beer, a singlet, stubbie shorts, a baggy green cricket cap, how cute!!

But then I realised thongs in America are not the foot wear we know them better as down under.

If Target tried to sell G-strings to 5 year olds here, someone would be on their way to jail.

Gravatar It's just incredible to me. Nate, I don't pay attention to little kids and I tend to be a homebody so I don't notice these things

I will keep my eyes peeled.

Gravatar We dress out daughter very conservatively, it's easy if you don't shop at Target/Walmart, et al.

Gravatar "...Mom's have replaced thier dolls with children, and they're playing with them..."

...and then they whine when bad men want to play with them, too.

I'm beginning to think that a burkha for daughters is not such a bad idea...

Gravatar I think I'm trying to raise my boys right. When they see a tart-in-training, the comment they make to us is, "Dad, she needs more clothes."

I pray it continues through their lives.

Gravatar I'm sure part of all this stems from the pop-tarts. (I'm hungry) I'm talking about Christina Agulara, Britney Spears, Janet (flash) Jackson and the rest of the trash on MTV. These people act like a bunch of dogs in heat.

Gravatar Sorry I'm late to this thread, but I'm packing to move.

Both of my girls are fairly girly-girl types. Even the one who is somewhat tom-boyish love to wear dresses.

Just last night I had to have a talk with one of my daughters (6 y/o) about why we don't want her wearing belly dresses and skirts with the waist bands rolled down! She was very understanding about it (for now), but I worry about her turning 12!!!

We buy a lot of their clothes from Costco, Sam's, Wal-Mart, and Target. Yes, you can find modest clothes at Wal-Mart and Target, but you do have to be careful.
