Is this memorial day long weekend you're having originate from the civil war?
"Oh yeah, and raise a beer to Nate will ya?"
No long weekend, but that sounds a legitimate enough reason for me.

Yes, Memorial Day started as a remembrance of the soldiers that died during the Civil War/War of Northern Aggression. Though, if I remember correctly, memorials were held on both sides, so it's not completely a yankee holiday. But the official observance was started by the north, to remember those who fought and died in that war.
After the Great War, 1919 I think, it was changed to be a memorial for soldiers who died in all wars, and was set to May 30. Then, in 1971, the congress passed a law making Memorial Day the last Monday in May, so we would get a three day weekend out of it.

Speaking of windshield wiper motors... yesterday I just happened to try to shut the garage door on my wife's minivan. Not just on the van, but on the rear windshield wiper! Not only did this twist the wiper, it caused the piece that attaches the opener to the door to pull out.
Well, I was able to twist the wiper back mostly into shape, and also to adjust the attachment pieces a little lower on the door so that my garage door would work again.

Off the subject I know but:
RJK, did you get the recipe? I'm one of those annoying people who has to see something through once I've said I will do it.

The only thing worse than the wiper motors loking up in the rain is the window motor going out while it's raining and the window is down. I had that happen in college. I drove it straight to the dealer and left it there overnight to have them fix it in the morning.
we had a crappy weekend in MN. It rained every day this weekend. It's still raining in fact. They've been talking drought here, but it rains at least three times a week. I'm wondering if I didn't get kidnapped and transplanted to Seattle.

Papapete - got it and thank you.
Hope everyone had a good holiday. I satyed inside and relaxed, which was nice. Finished reading The Idiot. Also discovered a new vice last night...The WB's SuperStar - the American Idol knowckoff where they make fun of really bad singers who are stupid enough to think they have talent. I know it's mean, but it's still very funny.

Nate,
It's too late for your beer; I missed your admonishment, as I was already off to the mountains with the family.
Too cold for water-skiing, but the horse ride past the snow-capped Collegiate Peaks was awesome.
Funny about your other post, too. Didn't miss the Internet the entire weekend, but would suffer withdrawal if my ISP went down when I wanted to use it.

Collegiate Peaks were are those mountains?

Res,
Affirmative. They comprise the bulk of the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness Area in Colorado. There are 8 peaks over 14,000 ft in this area of the Rockies.
Unfortunately, we didn't go prepared for high hiking (last time I let someone else plan a trip). So we stuck to the easy walks and horseback riding. Funny thing, we went for the hot springs but didn't get anywhere near them.
But hey, anytime outdoors with the family is good times!
