Perhaps split the investment between gold and Mr. Charles Daly.

Good post, Nate. I keep looking for Ramsey to "revise" his recommended investment strategy.

Good advice. We have gotten rid of one of our mutual funds and are instead buying gold with that money. Some cash in the IRA's (which are not currently invested in the stock market at all), some gold, and we are looking at a few other things. Diversify, don't expect anything but trouble from the government (people still "trust" the government. Amazing!) and expect the worst!

I added a little to my 'hoard' a few weeks ago.
I had a good time watching the young gal at the bank (try) to pull out my safety deposit drawer from the top row. It's a just tad heavy. I couldn't help but grin when she gave me the 'what in the heck is IN here' look.
How do you guys feel about keeping your stuff at the bank? I don't have a heavy duty safe at the house.
I'm a little concerned about something catastrophic (nuke in DC or whatever) that would cause Madame President to declare martial law a shut down the banks.

I personally wouldn't put mine in a bank or credit union. FDR already set the standard for shutting down the banks.

I wonder if 'shutting down the banks' would prevent me from getting to my safe deposit box (to retrieve Granny's will and whatnot).
If TSHTF during busines hours; I guess I'd be OK. I made a large withdrawl around noon on 9/11, assuming the worst.
I hope I'd see some stupid move by the Feds coming in time to get my stuff out.

No way I'm keeping anything at a bank. We keep plenty of cash on hand at the house... the heavy stuff is safer under your bed than at the bank... after all... who knows it's there?

PORCUS, the problem with banks is that is the gov't says hand it over, they will and I wouldn't be too confident that they wouldn't empty out your safety deposit box.
As to the real estate bubble, that thing is about to burst big time. Even the Star and Sickle (or maybe it was the other local rag) was talking about how real estate prices had stalled.

Yeah, I remember signing something to get the box that stated that the bank would open the box for law enforcement with a valid court order or seach warrant.
I'm just hoping there will be enough 'advance warning' to get my stuff out.
Real estate is still pretty hot in my area with no indications of cooling. We're morphing into 'Hilton Head Without The Beach' as retirees flee the huricanes and rising costs on the coast.
Good news for the local restaurants, golf courses, and stores that sell Depends.

So after The Doom has arrived and I go cash in my gold, will the cash be worth anything? Won't the full faith and credit of the US goverment have expired making my federal reserve note (more) worthless? Will I be able to get my Campbell's Tomato Soup?

I figure I'll use mine to buy MRE's. Gold and silver should still work on the black market.

Think pesos. People will still take cash... they'll just want a BUNCH of it.

Bill,
It's a shame you're married. I brought her a bottle of Wild Turkey "Russell's Reserve", poured her a glass, and marveled as she drank it down like it was sweet tea. I mean... the stuff is smooth as silk... but damn! I expected a wince... or a giggle... or at least a chaser!

Real estate is a good investment in the event of economic collapse only for the real estate you are living on. Shelter, and a place to grow food, chop your own wood, drink from your own well and hunt your own animals is valuable beyond gold. It can get you through the rough times when that case of Campbells soup in the closet runs out.
Condo's and apartments are just a place you go to die. Suburbs with all-municiple utilities are not much better.
I guess it all depends on what you mean by total economic collapse. Lots of countries in the past have survived that. Total collapse here would trigger total collapse globally (except those places that are already still living in the 18th century).

p.s.
It would also be useful if you had an oil well and a cracking tower on your land too.

Naw, not unless there were about 20 decent sized nukes popped over major cities. The US ain't gonna collapse overnight, or over a period of months, it will take a decade or so for the US to collapse based on economics and stupid laws.

I'm inclined to go with Bill on the time table... and by my figuring, we've got another 8 years or so to go.

Depends, a 8.5 quake in silcone valley could colapse it, and the interuption of the free flow of oil could as well.

That would be a fantastic investment in the meantime as oil gets more and more expensive (in dollar terms)
Make that land work for you, not just you for it. Tho I imagine land with a well of any sort is going to be out of the price range of the majority of your readers.

Well, I wouldn't call it working, as I'm no farmer, but our 45 acres just outside of Mannington should do the job. And yes, it's paid for.

I keep a small stockpile of marginally servicable weapons - guns, knives and swords - strictly for the purpose of bartering when TSHTF...there are gonna be alot of folks unprepared out there...
