Aight, here's a quick question for anybody who may know:
During the OK shoot-out, in what capacity were the Earps acting in, and where were the police/sherrif? I watched Tombstone today, well, half-way watched it while it was on in the background, and I noticed the "sherrif" coming out from the office saying something about arresting them. Then later, the Earps are Marshalls.
One of the most common responses I get when mentioning personal defense and my dislike of cops is "So you want everyone to carry guns and have OK Corral shoot-outs?" Obviously, the answer is no, but I'd love to be able to tell them that is was the police doing the shooting that day.

Will,
Virgil Earp was the sheriff of Tombstone. He deputized his brothers before the shootout, but not Doc.
He was a arrested by the County Sheriff.
Imagine the Sheriff of Knox county arresting the Knoxville Chief of Police for enforcing a law. That's pretty much what happened.

Gregg,
For the record, NBF's former slaves asked to be sharecroppers on his plantation after the war, and the original Klan had black folks in it. It was a guerilla orginization to harrass the yankee tyrants (minnesotans and such) desecrating God's country.

What I found out about the fighting in the Kansas-Missouri border area before and during the War of Northern Aggression leads me to believe that Frank and Jesse James were very effective shootists. Accounts of the time describe the tactics used by the men they rode with, the bushwackers. If you've seen the movie, The Outlaw Jose Wales, then you know these men could shoot accurately from horseback with either hand. That ain't easy. But I guess they got a lot of practice.

What I've noticed about all of the most effective fighters is that their attitude is what made them deadly. Their minds were more formidable than their fighting skills.
For Wyatt Earp to describe Holliday as nervy is saying something. Wyatt was no slouch when it came to functioning cooly under fire.

Will,
Nate's not fully correct.
Virgil Earp was the town Marshal in Tombstone at the time of the shootout. He did, as Nate stated, deputize his brothers.
John Beehan was the county Sheriff, though mostly a politician, schemer and coward. The Earps and Doc were all arrested (though not until the next day if I remember correctly) and they stood trial for murder.
They were all acquitted.

Also, I think Nate has confused Johnny Tyler for Ed Bailey.
Ed Bailey was the first man Doc ever killed and he did it with a blade, over a card game in Forth Worth, Texas.
He fled Texas and never returned because he was wanted by the Texas Rangers.

The video Patty linked to is of Jerry Miculek (pronounced Miss-u-lak) shooting his Smith and Wesson revolver chambered in 45ACP. It's probably worth noting that Jerry is not the fasted gunslinger ever officially timed. That honor would go to Ed McGivern (1874–1957) who was timed at 6 aimed shots in .45 seconds, the fastest Miculek has done is 6 shots in .56 seconds (in the video he takes a leisurely 1 second to shoot 8 shots).

Pretty dang good. The prior fastest shooter, Ed McGivern, could put 6 shots into a playing card from 18 feet in well under a second. McGivern is also renowned for being able to put 6 shots into a thrown tin can before it hit the ground (he claimed it was easy, and he did it pretty regularly). Given that Miculek is considered to be his successor, I'd think his shooting would be about as good.

Double action revolver, 6" barrel, .38 Special.

Oh, both McGivern and, I'm pretty sure, Miculek, use standard ammo, not particularly light loads.

Looking at the video you can see he is using under powered loads too (no effect from the recoil). But that is a common thing in competitions.

Nope. They're normal .45 ACP wadcutter loads. In fact, when Miculek was making a name for himself pin shooting he was using smokin' hot loads, WAY above the specs for the weapon. You're not gonna knock a pin off a table with light loads, the minimum most folks recommend is a 357, even stock 38's won't get the job done.

JAC,
I was using my S&W 629, empty. I doubt that I could run through 6 300grain grizzly rounds that fast, with any accuracy.
I know he’s got a custom deal from S&W, probably has a seer and trigger assembly polished smoother than a babies butt, with the shortest possible distances for component travel. He would have to, to get 6 under a second.
My 629 is probably the worst gun made by S&W (other than a 500) to try speed shooting with. Even so, the best finger dexterity I could muster wasn’t even half as good as his.
Did you try the experiment? How did you do?

Bill,
I was refering to this guy with the wheelgun. There is no way to mitigate recoil on a 6-gun. And he wasn't shooting pins.
With an auto you can get rid of some of the recoil. If the slide never quite hits the end and the recoil spring stops the slide then you get a more constant push rather than individual pushes. The same concept is used on the AA-12 a fully automatic 12 gauge shotgun. So Miculek could have had a similar mod on his auto.

Res, if this is the guy I think it is, his weapon is all but a freewheeler. I'm not tryin' to take anything away from him here, but there's more to the gun than it looks like. Now, the reload on the other hand; THAT looks superhuman.
Bill, That's a full lug barrel, probably 8 3/8" and ported to boot. 45ACP in a gun like that is about like a .22LR in a single six. Recoil is negligible. Sorta like shooting 45LC in my 9" 454. pffft!

Yeah, and it's got an 8 shot wheel on it, probably weighs 12 pounds. He ain't shooting light loads, just managing the loads he's shooting.

I don't know if I can reload that fast with my 1911.
So is the 454 a premier grade Freedom Arms? I’ve been dying to buy one since I got a one on one tour of the factory a few years back, but I never seem to have an extra $2,500 bucks.

Super Redhawk Res. I thought the 454 needed the double lockup like the ruger and taurus have. Also the Freedom Arms, though a beautiful piece, seemed impractical to me, not to mention PRICEY. I abuse mine with lead bullets, hot loads, and have even made black powder cartridges in 45LC to run through it. I wouldn't pla around like that with a "nice" gun.
