Gravatar Nate I apologize for hijacking your post.

Nate or Anyone:

I am going to be purchasing a handgun in the near future. I also plan on getting a CC permit. I am looking for something that when used for defense will leave no doubt that it was used, if you know what I mean. I would like to find a gun that can be used for home defense as well as function well as a concealed weapon. Any recommendations? Nate, I saw JAC's post on the Browning 1911C - cool.

I am going to look into a gun for Mrs. Wooly as well so recommendations here would be welcome, too.

Thanks!

Gravatar I saw that article earlier this week. I loved it. It also reminded me of all the farm boys I grew up around.

Gravatar My favorite line:
"Of course you might cure cancer. And I guess penicillin is pretty good stuff. Maybe everybody’s got some virtue, even professors. They still can’t cure an asteroid."

I also really liked the term "Human Okra". I'll have to file that one away.

Gravatar Wooly,
I dont know a lot, only a little...Nate could probably help more...
If you're looking for just one gun to carry and that has the knock - down energy when it arrives, i would think you have to look for,at the least, a 9mm or .40 caliber, with the .45 GAP being a newer and more concealable choice with the most knockdown...polymer frame probably for carry (18 - 28 oz, depending)...trigger pull (pounds) is important for
accuracy on first round fired..
Seriously, go to the magazine rack at a big book store and buy all the pistol mags you can find, read the reviews of different models, etc..in a few days, you'll be well on your way to deciding what you need
these are just some basics...remember the smaller the pistol, the less accurate, but the more concealable...you've got a decision to make...i'm in that process again right now myself

Gravatar wooly,
sorry, me again..
i'm trying to get miss ridgeback daddy shooting, and it aint goin well...she's scared of new things, especially ones that go BOOM and can kill things...it's going to depend on her temperament...females are very easy to teach actually, because they do not carry any preconceived notions into learning - you know us redneck males -- "we know how to do it, just give me that thing"...obviously, the more firepower she can handle, the less shots needed on target, but confidence and accuracy is more important...obviously many fems like the .38

Gravatar r'back daddy:

Thanks for the advice. A couple of things have transpired in our city that seem to have overcome her aversion to things that go 'BOOM' so we'll see. I did take her clay pigeon huntin' a few years ago and she wasn't afraid of my 12 guage (even though it was WAY too big for her) so we'll see how this goes. She's gotten into 'protective mama' mode so I'm not going to underestimate her.

Gravatar nate said: "Smokin' and drinkin'.. smokin' and drinkin'.... Hell throw in Jesus and by God now we'd a song!"

check out tim mcgraw's new one "drugs or Jesus"...even though he can't sing worth a crap...saw the writer of that song perform it at Wild Adventures in Valdosta, GA a few years ago....interesting

Gravatar Another suggestion is to go to a shooting range and rent a pistol you're interested in. Most ranges will have some Glocks and 1911s for you and your wife to try at the very minimum. Also if you have a friend with a large pistol collection, offer to pay his/her way to the range and ammo to shoot his/her guns with your wife.

Whatever you decide on, spend the money to get a quality product. If you don't know how to assess the wear on a pistol buy new, or if you buy used, buy only from a TRUSTED seller.

Oh yeah, get a good .22 pistol also. It's good for teaching, easy on the wallet, and just fun.

Gravatar I already got a chance to go postal on one person who thought the Rebel flag really is about racism and white supremacy, I was like, it was about independence, state's rights, and freedom of self-determination! They shut up when I started on Lincoln and compared the ending at the Lincoln Memorial of Marky Mark's Planet Of The Apes to how eerily similar the oppressive state is today - it's like stepping off a Southron Ship to an alternate reality where your views on government are the minority now, no one cares about your side of the story, and everyone hates you with a passion. "You damn dirty redneck!"

He was impressed.

Gravatar Jamie -

God bless ya man!!

Gravatar Papapete:

I got the same advice from a local gun store over lunch: rental as well as getting a .22 to get used to trigger pull and breathing.

I don't know enough about handguns yet to buy used so I will be buying new.

Looked at a nice Springfield XD .40 - any thoughts?

Thanks!

Gravatar Wooly,

I just got my brand new Kimber CDP II in 45 ACP. What a great carry gun! I'm sending JAC a few pics. Maybe he’ll post them.

I own several 45's and other hand guns. Springfield is still a favorite of mine, the Kimber is replacing a Fully Loaded Springfield as my primary carry gun.

For a top of the line, out of the box gun, I’m saying the CDP II I just bought would be hard to beat for CCW. (Which is why I got it.)

For your wife. Forget about going to a more powerful round for now, buy the 22.

I recommend the Browning Buck Mark, or Rugar Mark II. I’ve used both and love em. Walther has a P22 that I think I’d buy for a woman it has smaller shaped grips and is a poly frame. It should be less than $375. Take her to look at them. Girls want a gun that looks good.

Gravatar Wooly

I recomend this one as a possible choice.

Gravatar I want one of these. Maybe Christmas.

Gravatar Eeks....I push papers.....

But hey, I can smile real purty!

Gravatar when you hear someone slamming on rednecks... they ain't actually slamming on a small segment of society.

They're slamming on men.

That's the a-men truth. Good post.

Gravatar Res... I can't believe you went kimber on me.

fag.

Gravatar For a .22 look at the Beretta Neos. It's a very natural pointing gun and looks good too. It's also fairly cheap for a decent gun. Here's an article and picture:

Gravatar BTW, mine did come with 2 mags. Someday soon I'm gonna mount a red dot on it and go prairie dog hunting.

Gravatar "For your wife. Forget about going to a more powerful round for now, buy the 22."

Not necessarily. After I got my Kimber my wife won't shoot the .22 anymore. "It's not heavy enough." I think the real reason is she just likes making big holes in the targets.

Of course since she didn't grow up around pistols she didn't realise she was supposed to be afraid of the .45, so she wasn't. In fact she prefers it to 9mm or .40.

Gravatar Girls want a gun that looks good.

Not me, I want a gun that looks mean.

Gravatar Papapete, if you don't mind me asking how much did you pay for the Beretta Neos?

Re: Rednecks... My experience has been that there are two types of Rednecks.
One, the kind that Jeff Foxworthy jokes about, the ones that the Yankees make the jokes about, etc.
And two, the rednecks that are self-sufficient.

It wasn't until I was down South and made some good Southron friends that I learned that some folks liked to be referred to as Redneck. Several of my friends shared with me the whole (A Country Boy Can Survive mentality).
I understood it, was always aware of it - ie, survival mentality, being prepared, etc), but had always thought that was just what is called Self-Reliant.

I don't think we have any special name for Maineiacs (someone who lives in Maine for more then a few years) or folks who live in upstate NH who can weather the blizzards and such without a blink. They are just smart folk who are prepared and know how to take care of themselves and their own.

Gravatar Now you Southron folks (or Midwesterners), question for you... does the term Hillbilly carry any negative connotation, to you, with it?

I grew up hearing that someone who was a Hillbilly was someone who didn't take care of their house, their car(s), their kids, their business. They mainly lazed around, drank lots and did some other unsavory activities which I never did find out about as I was too young.

I heared about them before I saw 'em... several houses down from my grandma's. I still don't know how many kids they had. At least three girls and it seemed twice as many boys. Once I met 'em the only thing I really knew about them was Wooooeee, could those boys fight! But once you held your own or even beat one of 'em they treated you like a brother.

If you've ever seen the movie, The War... the Hillbilly family (Lipnicki)in it, were dead ringers for this family. Except this family had a mom although she looked about like the dad, from the movie.

Gravatar SB: "Not me, I want a gun that looks mean."

That's the difference between girls and women.

Gravatar OK anyone got any info on Dan Wesson .45's since CZ bought the company. I's been my 2nd choice after the truely high dollar Kimber models. Of course if their amazing accuracy and function have suffered since the sale I would have to scrap them as a favorite.

Gravatar In my thinking, hillbillies are more backward than rednecks. Hillbillies live in the mountains or in the hills. Rednecks live everywhere.

Gravatar I paid $265 for my Neos a couple of years ago. However, I have since found a dealer out of town who is a preferred dealer for Kimber and Beretta that I could have gotten it from a little cheaper. My Kimber was about $70 cheaper through him than in the city.
