Gravatar Looks like the kids have learned something so perhaps the school did accomplish their goal of teaching.

Gravatar I don't care how good you think your local school system is. They all suck. All of them. They suck because they were designed to suck.

So, if you attended a local school, does that imply that you suck, too? Or were you like most underachieving kids, "too clever" to be fooled into learning how to identify roots of a quadratic equation? (because, after all, like Pythagoras believed, you just can't trust common folk with advanced math skills...)

Gravatar i did in fact attend government schools. my experience there was exactly as gatto describes. The bright are purposefully slowed to the level of the dumbest in their respective catagories.

I did what many do. The bare minimum. I meandered my way through school, naively looking forward to college, because I thought college would finally be a place of learning. needless to say, after a couple years... I got a 4.0 one semester without ever purchasing a single textbook.

At that point I threw it all away. I simply stopped caring. I didn't need it, and I didn't want it.

its possible to survive the system... but hey... its possible to survive a shark attack too. you gonna chum where your kids swim and figure, what don't kill'em makes 'em stronger?

Gravatar Si senor. My 8 yr. old is done with public school next month. On to perochial school, as we've had enough. *And, as an aded bonus, next year the schools begin the federally mandated psychiatric evaluations to determine which drug of choice is appropriate for your childs issue. (The drugging is also mandated by federal law) They expect 6 million new "patients" to be diagnosed. Be very afraid.

Gravatar So, if you attended a local school, does that imply that you suck, too? Or were you like most underachieving kids, "too clever" to be fooled into learning how to identify roots of a quadratic equation?

Ah, I see we have a Government School graduate. And I see they taught you logic as well as math.

Gravatar Billy... got more specifics on the testing?

Gravatar i did in fact attend government schools. my experience there was exactly as gatto describes. The bright are purposefully slowed to the level of the dumbest in their respective catagories.

This would explain Nate's creative spelling. Nate, you've got some good friends to not take more heat than you do on that. Heck, you could just run it through OpenOffice first and post afterwards...

Just a little ribbing as I gear up for a great ATF this evening. Though I do have to be up early - more drinking on Saturday than Friday. But, praise God, this Sunday is a drinkin' night, too.

Gravatar Demo.. repeat after me...

I don't give a shit.

I type what comes out. I rarely if ever go back and edit anything, or take the time to use a spell checker. I type everything online, on blogger's little editor.

Gravatar Go to www.lewrockwell.com for an article by Gary North about this situation. He published an article about this yesterday and had a follow up article today.

Gravatar Yeah, go here:

http://www.libertypost.org/cgi-b...gi? ArtNum=95458

This should scare the hell out of ever person with children. It's real bad, and it's now the law.

Gravatar Billy D - I only got to the second paragraph before I said "holy shit."

Gravatar I hear you SB. Bad, bad, bad. Right now it's only those in the PS system, but I'm sure that'll change soon. Almost makes you want to cry. Lots of kids will be hurt by this, and I lay the blame at the feet of GWB and Ted Kennedy.

Gravatar It seriously made me sick to my stomach as I was reading it and knowing how many of my friends and aquiantences are sending or planning to send their kids to public school.

Gravatar Billy D, I have gone through all the publicly available information I could find on the New Freedom Initiative and found nothing about mandatory testing. Could you please give me an official citation which confirms what that post said?

Gravatar Billy D, I have gone through all the publicly available information I could find on the New Freedom Initiative and found nothing about mandatory testing.

I also read through quite a bit of stuff on it, most of it echoed the White House line;
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/ f...initiative.html

Don't sound great, but don't sound all that bad. About like every other government program.

Gravatar Well, I don't really have time to look around now. But, I will do it later tonight, or in the wee hours of the a.m., and I'll post whatever I can find at my site. I don't want to "highjack" or anything; I don't do that.

Nate - I'm sorry I opened this can of worms here. Please accept my apologies.

Gravatar Hell no you won't apologize boy. I'm all in favor of this particular can bein' opened.

Gravatar Watch for wording like “happiness indicators” or “family participation.”

It's amazing how closely this resembles the modus operandi of the Nazis.

The fact is that our president has mandated that every American child, age 3 through 18, is federally ordered to be evaluated for mental health issues and to receive “enforced” treatment.

Who in their right minds would submit their children to life in these mini-gulags?

Gravatar Yep, that was my experience after reading Gatto's book, too. Even though I live in Canuckistan, his words rang so many truth bells, and aligned so well with my experiences that it was amazing. I then decided that I wanted to check out some of his facts..something I haven't really started yet.

Nonetheless, I agree..the public schools suck for many, many reasons. One of the issues I have with it is the model of a teacher training a large group of children..we don't cater education to the needs of the individual child, but to the needs of the whole, the larger system. The one-size-fits-all curriculum does not work, which is why you have so many kids who are bored, acting up, or not excelling in their studies as they may have the potential to do so. Often enough, the bureaucracy is working for itself, not the students under it's charge.

Just go to the debates on tax credits for parents who homeschool or private school their children for more details on that.

Gravatar OK guys. I posted a lot of links on my site, but if you go to:

http://www.ablechild.org/board/?...d/? topic=topic1

You will have a lot of questions answered. Lot's of reading there. But, I want to warn you, there are incredibly heartbreaking stories here, and they're all from parents of children who live with this stuff everyday. These folks will answer whatever questions you may have about any of this (mandatory testing, etc.) stuff.

Nate - thanks.

Gravatar That is sooooo scarry. When I was in Highschool, almost twenty years ago (I'm 34)- the school psych was evaluating every student who was often truent for latent homosexuality. I went to school in S.Cal.

My parents let me drop out when I was a Junior. It sounds insane. But, my parents had a lot of faith in me. I was dancing with a ballet co. so it wasn't like I was hanging out on some street corner.

And I never did get through college. And I'm just here to testify that my life is awesome. I have a fabulous husband who adores me, wonderful children, a full life with ministry and friends. None of that can be attained through school.

I gues that's why I'm so confident in homeschooling. I'm self educated and it's served me well thus far.

Gravatar That's a great testimony, CZJA.

Gravatar A real clincher for me were some books by John Holt. He was a teacher of grade school age children. He wrote about how children learn.

His observations were extremely insightful. He trained himself to be a good observer over many many years.

He came to a few very important conclusions.

see next post

Gravatar Children learn best on their own.

There are no truly dumb people only people that choose to be dumb.

Forcing someone to do anything is counterproductive.

Stress seriously impairs higher brain function.

Those are the ones I remember. I'm sure there are more. The main message I got from the three books I read of Mr. Holt's was that public schools actually do more harm than good. The system is incapable of doing good and is designed to damage the intellect and natural curiosity of any child subjected to it.

Gravatar But don't take my word for it. Read Holt's books. I got mine from Amazon.
