Gravatar I crashed out earlier on, back up, but now sufficiently sober for having done it. I had a white wine at an Argentinian restaurant last night, a local McLaren Vale - Hardy's Tintarra, then I finished off with a Corona. Got back, went for tried and true local Draughties.

Some of that South American food is alright, who knew?

Gravatar The first part of this post cracked me up.

Gravatar Nate I'm curious, what do you have against Kimber? They make a good product for a reasonable price. They've singlehandedly brought quality 1911s into the general public's pricerange. If it weren't for Kimber your beloved Springfield 1911 would cost $3000, assuming it was available at all. Why all the hate for Kimber?

Now Glocks I sort of understand. They look ugly, but they're sturdy and reliable. I've fired 9mm Glocks and .45 Glocks. I liked the 9mm, didn't like the .45.

If a company makes a good product for a reasonable price, more power to them.

Gravatar "Nate I'm curious, what do you have against Kimber?"

I hate Kimber for not being Springfield.

As for your theory that Kimber single-handedly lowered the price of quality 1911s... I find it dubious. Springfield's guns are less expensive, and come with more features.

The 1911 market has always been competitive and always will be. For example, we can expect things to get even tastier now that CZ's finacial muscle is backing Dan Wesson.

In terms of benevolent competition I welcome and thank Kimber. But in terms of Res' defection from the Rightous Rank and File of the Springfield Armory... to the craven halls of Kimberdom... I am appauled.

Plus... if we can't bicker over 1911's.... what on earth can we bicker about?

Gravatar “Springfield's guns are less expensive, and come with more features.”

“more features” Like the crack your smoking?

I still got my Fully Loaded Springfield in all its 5in barrel glory. I may even shoot it in competition this summer. Or I might do what some guys are and go Para for the extra weight of the P-14, although I do tend to hate my Para for costing me more than $500 bucks to fix it when the stinking company wouldn’t ‘cause I owned it 72 hours without complaining.

Gravatar Cigar: Helix Churchill a little while ago.

Looks like I'll be getting a Springfield 1911 soon; a friend of my sister's is selling one at a price I can't refuse. But I have a question: have any of you used .22LR conversion kits in a 1911? I heard about 'em a while back, and thought it was a great idea since .45 isn't terribly cheap (and I'm not yet 21, so acquiring ammo is a minor inconvenience.)

Gravatar My Pro CDP II cost an even grand. It came:

Fully debarred
25 oz
Double diamond rosewood grips
30 lpi front strap checkering
30 lpi under the trigger
20 lpi main spring
Night sights
Ambi safety
Visual loaded chamber check
Tactile loaded chamber check
One piece match barrel
Polished feed ramp
Flared ejection
Heavy duty springs and match grade components hand assembled and finished
Firing pin block safty

By contrast the Fully Loaded Champion

Ain’t debarred
35 oz
standard grips
NO CHECKERING at ALL
Night sights has em
Ambi yes
NO loaded chamber checks
Two piece wielded, standard barrel
Standard ejection port
Freaking supper glossy stainless, doubles as a mirror
Standard safeties

If I had bought another Springfield for a carry gun, I would have had another $500 to $700 in gunsmith costs in addition to the $922 MRSP. Other Springfield Custom Shop products like:

Custom Operator $2495.00
Professional $2395.00
Custom Carry $1499.00
PPC Distinguished $1950.00
1500 $2095.00
Expert Ltd. $1825.00
Expert $1985.00
Distinguished Ltd. $2695.00

For me and my intended use, the choice was clear. Kimber

(In all fairness to Nate, I found one feature that I like better on Springfield. The beaver tail is a little pointy and that can make it uncomfortable in the car)

Gravatar horseshit res. You're comparing the price you paid on the kimber, to the MSRP on the springfield.

You show me someone who paid 900 bucks for a Champion, and I'll show you a moron who got took.

Besides you're comparing apples and organges. The micro compact comes in at 24ozs with a total length of just 6.7 inches. It also has a ramped bull barrell, and novak sites. and yes... It's fully bevelled for carry... and it has ambi saftey too!

At an msrp of 1200.00 you could've had one for about 900.00. Less than you paid for that kimber.

Dammit.

Gravatar See the BadAss lightweight Bi-Tone Micro Compact here:

Gravatar I'm looking at it right now.

Gravatar My youngest daughter bought her man a S&W .500 Magnum for his birthday. I thought I'd get a coupla boxes of something light - maybe 300 grain and help him break it in.
Then I found the price! Some outfits are selling rounds at near three dollars each!
Guess I'll buy another brick of .22s and invite him to the range. We'll use my rifle (sigh).
.

Gravatar That’s an officers size not a commander. Kimber makes one of those too. I don’t like having my finger hang over the grip, so I went commander.

Now compare the commander sized guns, my 45 ACP novice.

Gravatar Please note the "order online" button which will show you several dealers willing to sell you that micro for around 900 bucks.

Gravatar OK Points to Springfield. They ship two mags standard. Kimber only sends one. You’d think Kimber would send 2 or 3 Wilson or Chip McCormick mags standard.

Gravatar The Champion can be purchased all day for between 5 and 6 hundred dollars man. how can you possibly justify comparing that to a weapon you paid a grand for?

Gravatar Nate your right I can get Springfield’s for 10% over cost and shipping just like everybody else. But I’d still have to pay a gunsmith to redo some of the work. I have never had a refinishing on a gun be as nice as the factory coat. Kimber bakes the coating on after all the checking and debarring is done.

Gravatar Geez it’s not like I went out and wasted money on a colt.

Gravatar Dude... did you get to hold these guns? An out of the box springfield.. excluding only the GI-45 and the Mil-Spec, come with every feature you can think of and more. They have titanium firing pins... they have freakin' adjustable triggers to remove any possible trigger slack...

Don't get me wrong here... I started all this just to poke ya with a stick man... Just ribbin' ya and such... The Kimber is a great gun.

But damned if I'll have the fine name of Springfield disparaged in such a fashion.

Frankly... I think some kimber dealer blew smoke up your ass.

Gravatar "Geez it’s not like I went out and wasted money on a colt."

Bahahaa... ok... sorry.. now i have to clean the keyboard....

Gravatar I had to special order the gun from my dealer, he doesn’t stock Kimber. I checked em out and for a carry piece I had to go with Kimber.

I still love everything in my safe from Springfield. This is just a great gun. If it proves to be a looser I’ll own up to it. I should be shooting league all summer so we’ll see how it does after using it, I’m still in the break in period.

What are you doing next Fri? How about hopping a plane to Denver for a few days of drinking, shooting and rafting?

Gravatar Kimber marketing blunder. They sell ya a gun with their top of the line Rosewood grips on it. Then they ask you to fill out a new buyer survey, so you can, get $20 bucks off a set of rosewood grips.

Maybe I should ask for the contract to redo their marketing feed back campaign.

Gravatar OK serious question. Have ya'll ever used Wolf 45 ACP ammo? It's cheap and I don't want to spend time hunting my brass this summer.

Gravatar White merlot? Seriously? I've never had one I even remotely liked, let me know what you think of it.

Gravatar "It's cheap and I don't want to spend time hunting my brass this summer."

That is why I shoot 9mm. I can afford both the gun and lots of ammo.

A = None. Although I did have a Cappacino Blast from Baskin-Robbins earlier.

T = None.

F = Come into a little extra money recently and am debating either buying another gun or paying off debt. Hmmm, decisions, decisions, decisions.

M (Movies) = Saw Crossfire Trail earlier today, Tom Selleck (sp?) directed and starred in it. Pretty good cowboy flick. Based on the Louis L'Amour book. Also saw Darkness. Ok, scary movie. A couple of scenes that were worth the jump, although very poor character development... they tried and didn't make them real. They should have either not tried in the first place or done a better job of it. Didn't like the ending either.

Sad to say, I'll probably pay on the debt. *sigh*

Gravatar these entries are why there is so much pleasure in the gun nut forrest. anyhow i have a kimber 1911 with a polymer frame, 14 round double stack, and stainless slide. it has never hung up a round and performed to perfection. within the last 2 months bought 2 CZ rifles; one in 223 and the other a mannlicher style 270. the rifle's trigger, fit and finish, and price simply blow the competition away. which reminds me, range time today.

Gravatar Never had one SpaceBunny... I don't know how to explain it. It's like I know I shouldn't do it... but I'll do it anyway...

Gravatar Get over it Nate there is nothing wrong with a Kimber

Gravatar Gregg... We're all aware that you are among the uninitiated... You are not a member of the Cult of the 1911.. Why then should you worry about my disparaging a kimber?

Gravatar "uninitiated... '

Nate you ignorant slut, I have more guns than you will ever dream of having, hehhehehehehe. Why dost thou protest too much? You argue over one!

Gravatar "OK serious question. Have ya'll ever used Wolf 45 ACP ammo? It's cheap and I don't want to spend time hunting my brass this summer."

I've used Wolf .45 ACP ammo and it works just fine. I was a little worried about the steel casing, but I emailed Kimber and they said no problem. Plus I can get it about 40% cheaper than Winchester, which is the next cheaper brand. The only problem is that I have to go out of town to my favorite gun shop to get it so cheap (that's a real hardship; road trip alone to a gun shop where the owner likes to sit around and BS all day and where I can play with - I mean examine - some of the prettiest handguns around). And I get to justify it as saving money.

Life is so tough.

Gravatar Wolf will cost me about $150 per 1000 with shiping. I reload, but thats not to much more than reloading.

Gravatar I shot wolf ammo in .40... never .45acp... but the .40 fired fine.

Gravatar Checkin' in late, folks. Dept. picnic yesterday--we got an extra half-day off. WAHOO!!

Saturday night:
Drinkin': diet Coke made w/ Splenda
Hangin' with: Her Furriness, the real Empress Kitty
Listening to: Nickelback's The Long Road

Gravatar "Boooooo" to the Nicleback.

Gravatar The wife okayed me to get a carry-pistol. (I still need a permit, but I want the pistol first so I can practice before taking the class required in MN).

What would you guys recommend in the $5-600 price range? I like .40, but would consider a good .45 too.

Gravatar Echo Zoe,

A 357 mag revolver with a 2 or 3 in barrel, is hands down your best choice for a gun to start out on. You can shoot 38 wad cutters through it and it is almost impossible to screw up the gun.

If you must have an auto loader, buy a Springfield in 45 acp. It’s going to be the best gun in the price range you are considering.

Personally I’d go get a 22 and see how serious you are about doing this before you invest the bucks into a carry gun and training and range time. Then if your still into it save up and buy a top of the line carry gun that you will be happy with for years to come.

Training is key and burning though ammo is how you train. Don’t even think about carrying a gun until you are confident in your ability to make it go bang and have the bullet hit.

Gravatar Thanks Res.

I have a .40 right now, but it is a full sized. I'm not sticking that under my belt, so I want something a little smaller. And as long as the wife is okay with me getting another gun, I'm going to go for it.

I'm just curious what people recommend.I don't have $1200 for a pistol, and want something I will be happy with. I'm not much of a fan of revolvers though.

Gravatar If you’re firmly in the $500 range get a Springfield in a Fully Loaded Champion. Otherwise my Kimber Pro CDP II is hard to beat, it just costs twice what you want to pay.

Feature for feature I think it is worth it to get a Kimber, but I squirreled away money for about 18 months and shopped the market hard before I bought it.

Springfield and Rugar are hard to beat in terms of quality. If you like the looks of a glock I think I’d check out their compact 40. Glock makes a fine gun, most of us that don’t like em is because of cosmetics. TopGlock.com has some good prices.

Gravatar Actually, my .40 is a Glock 22. I like Glock, and have thought about the subcompact .40 for my carry gun, but I don't want all my guns to be Glocks.

As far as cosmetics, I think Glocks look cool. The Springfield 1911 is a sweet looking gun, but that doesn't mean the Glock isn't.

Gravatar Hrm...

I carry a full-sized gun concealed. Always have... and JAC has been known to tote around a .454 casull. After all.. you never know when ya might need to shoot through an engine block.

If I were gonna go small right now, I'd be looking at springfield XDs, Walther P99s, CZ's, and Taurus 24/7's.

Gravatar A fullsize but light is the Kimber BP Pro 10 II. It's a polymer frame full size .45. It has the added advantage of holding a 13 round mag. Even though it's light, it handles well without too much perceived recoil. I got mine for $550, so it's in the price range you specified (sort of).
