First! That's ME - not Danica.
I might actually watch this race. Or parts thereof...
.

Yeah, gotta love those feminists...*shakes my head*

I don't pretend to know anything about this sport (if you can call it that), so I'm just taking your word for it when you say that the pressure could land her in the hospital.

But then, when these people are trying to make a point - they don't seem to care who it hurts sometimes.

OK Nate, she got your miracle and finished 4th. Alright darlin' now sit back and watch how the big boys race. Her going 3 wide at Talledega?? Her panties would be in a bunch for the next 5 days. This Danica, she's cute and all, and only 23... that's nice.... what kind of chance do you think she has even thinking of making the jump?? Notice, it wasn't her talking that smack.

That was me, stinkin' Haloscan.

Nate,

Man...I respect ya'...and I like ya'... but the girl "got it done"...and that's sumptin'...

Give her credit Nate, she beat you're predicted top ten and made the top five. Not bad for a rookie.

Hey Nate!!!

Who do ya' like at Charlotte?

I was up in that area yesterday... drove through Darlington and Rockingham...

I'm pullin' for Rusty... Though it is probably a long shot...

Just finsihed off the Woodford Reserve...

Working on beer now...

I don't think wimmen folk belong in race cars, except maybe quarter-milers. They don't have the reflexes, muscle strength and build for when things go wrong. Heck, they barely have the reflexes and strength for when things are going right! Sure there's the "one percenters" that can compete at the local and maybe regional level, but when you get up into the top one percenters of men, well, that's a whole nutter thing. Women start racing at that level, they're gonna start dying. I know cars have gotten a lot safer over the past years, but as they say, "The laws of physics are a m*****f***er, make SURE they're on your side".

...all evidence to the contrary...

Gravatar Bill:

You've got the feminazis frothing like dogs w/ hydrophoby, over that 'un. Better watch yer back.

She finished in 4th place, eh? That's quite an accomplishment. Aiming high is great; but I think Nate was/is still right. Putting lots of undue pressure on her to win the race, when she's very inexperienced, is not a great idear.

Gravatar She DID cause a wreck during a caution...I laughed and laughed.

She was appropriately humble, sweet-voiced, and cute in after-race interviews. No feminist there, methinks. Cute too.

She's cute. Cute cutie cute cute. Mmmm...

Gravatar I can give a few good reasons why NASCAR is hesistant to encourage women drivers.

1) The inevitable Tampax Car (wasn't a Viagra car bad enough?)
2) The inevitable garage romance
3) The inevitable pit stop for "Cramps"
4) Playboy: The Women of NASCAR (family friendly marketing campaign? not anymore)

Just the first couple of nightmares that come to my mind...

Gravatar She had a great rave boys. Ijust hope everyone realizes how great a race it was. I suspect there is real disappoint in the media today.. as people who've never watched the indy before tuned in, and couldn't understand why she wasn't just driving past everyone.

Gravatar Hey Nate, check my blog for a column by Thomas Sowell, in which he blames "redneck culture" for the state of American blacks.

Gravatar She made history just by leading the race for 19 laps. I think she did perfectly: she didn't do a bad job, and she showed that she's there for a reason. For those who keep saying that she's just a girl, I suggest that they ask everybody who finished the race by staring at her rear bumper whether or not she's a fluke.

Gravatar She made history just by leading the race for 19 laps.

How so? Janet Guthrie was the first women to lead the field in a NASCAR race, and she was also the first women to race in the Indianapolis 500. Lyn St. James also raced at Indy, as has Sarah Fisher, who was the first women to lead the field at an Indy race. So, how exactly did she make history?

For those who keep saying that she's just a girl, I suggest that they ask everybody who finished the race by staring at her rear bumper whether or not she's a fluke.

You soooo don't get the problem.

It's not that women can't compete in motor sports, heck, there's been dozens of women racers going all the way back to the earliest days of Grand Prix, flat track, and drag racing. The problem is that they've demonstrated a rather shocking rate of injury and a lack of being able to recover from bumps and spins. When a car is in a spin the driver is subject to several G's of force, during this the driver MUST correct the steering (or burst into flame, or slam into a wall, or both), which requires applying a hundred pounds or so of fairly precise control to a violently shaking steering wheel. It's been amply demonstrated that women don't have the upper body strength to wrest the car back under control reliably. This is the problem.

FYI, power steering is a bad idea because you lose the feel of the track, larger steering wheels (more leverage) reduce reaction time and are likely to cause injury.

Gravatar OK

Let's see she made a rookie mistake knocking two cars out of the race, came in 4th and she is on the front page of USA Today, The British driver who won was the first Brit to win the Indy since 1966. Hrmmmmm?

Gravatar Bill, it was my understanding that no woman had ever led at the Indy 500 before Danica came along. Also, how is having a woman in the race a problem? If they can't handle the physical requirements of the race, they won't succeed for very long. It works the same way with guys. What's the problem with that?

Gravatar Not to mention that the brit who one is also the first driver to ever win 4 of the first 5 races... and before indy, he was the only driver to win 3 of 4.

Its the hottest start in series history... yet what is everyone talkin' about?

The chick.

Gravatar Patty,
Having her in the race isn't the problem. Making the race about her is the problem. It's the turning the race into a sideshow that bothers us.

Gravatar Also, how is having a woman in the race a problem? If they can't handle the physical requirements of the race, they won't succeed for very long.

This is true, and so far none of them have succeeded for long in anything but drag racing. Look at the men racing, it's pretty common for 40 and even 50 year old men to be driving race cars. Heck, according to them they're just getting the hang of it. Yet, look at the women racers. They're lucky to make it past their 30th birthday behind the wheel.

Even Sarah Fisher, who was a star driver when she was new (in five years of racing she was voted most popular driver three times), and she can't get sponsership in Indy cars cause she keeps putting them into the wall.

Yet, despite her past problems, Fisher just got picked up by NASCAR. Why? Because they have a program called 'Drive for Diversity' and all they want is a women in the car because it's still novel enough to pump up ratings.
