I saw the previews of Cold Mountain and resolved to stay away at all costs. I'm not sure why, but the advertising meant to entice me to see it left me disliking it instead. IMHO, if the makers misread my likes and dislikes so radically, the chance that they'll make something I like is minimal.

Since then of course, I'm boycotting Ms. Kidman's works because of her involvement in whatever that kiddie porn movie was, so renting it is also out of the question.

Gravatar "the advertising meant to entice me to see it left me disliking it instead"

I felt the same way. Their awful ascents didn't help either. There’s nothin’ so distracting in movie than a character with a bad southern drawl.

Gravatar UO must spend a lot of time distracted... I can think of maybe... 3 decent southron accents...

Gravatar I didn't see it, won't see it. I can't believe you saw it. Was Leonardo DiCaprio in it? That's the only way I could fathom you going to see it or renting it. Since you're a fan and all....

ARRGH!

Gravatar I told you quite sometime back that cold mountain sucked, didn't take my advice did ya.

Gravatar Can't have the hero of a major motion picture believing in the UN-PC Confederate cause, now can we? Of course he had to be made a desserter!

Gravatar Dude.. what in the Blue Hell would make any of you think that I watched that trash?

Hell no i didn't watch it. I read the reviews... read what folks said about the script before it came out... and promptly swore out a death curse on all involved.

Gravatar "what in the Blue Hell would make any of you think that I watched that trash?"

Maybe a review with no disclamer?

Gravatar Nate,
haven't seen that crappy movie, but might go rent it for comic relief.
Hellywood has a great way,as most most Yankee thought crimes perpetrated ,have a great way of doing revisionist history for public consumption, whether it's movies, or public school teachings of the War of
Northern Aggresion,or liberal/yankee mindset. I'd like to give an example of how bad things are in Louisianistan of history of the war teaching, teachers. When my son was in the 8th grade, they take LA. history as a mandatory course. When he was to write an essay about the war,I helped him with picking a subject, and he chose to write about the black soldiers who fought for the Confederacy. When he took the paper, which was written quite well for a kid his age,and well researched I might add, When he turned it in, he told me the teacher who btw, was black ,didn't even completely read his paper, promptly gave him an F, and sent home a letter
for me to have a conference with the teacher and the principle. Also, the same week that he turned the paper in,was the same week the MLK holiday was ,this same teacher told the class that the character mentioned above " died for all of us". When i went to the conference with the principle and the militant with a license to "teach", I explained, as politely as I could, that my son's paper was based on fact, and if the "teacher" had done some reserch herself, she would have found out so herself. I also told them that MLK's real name was Michael King, that he had ties with communist organizations, and also a notorious womanizer, all well known at the time of his death, and that he was murdered, not martyred, and to equate him to Jesus Christ was absurd,if not an outright lie. Iasked the Principal to get the teacher to rethink her grading of my son's paper, or I would drag them both in front of the school bord for a hearing, if not put a lawsuit on all of them. The "teacher" then got up ,in a huff, and said "well, I know where he gets it from" I replied to her "if that means that I REFUSE TO LET YOU CRAM THAT PC BULLSHIT DOWN HIS THROAT OR INFECT HIS MIND WITH THAT CRAP, I'LL TAKE THAT AS A COMPLIMENT." Needless to say it was handled, much to her chagrin. Before I go, I see that MORGAN has slithered over here, and answering her tomes are like shooting fish in a barrel.
A proud southron boy,

Gravatar I have no intention of seeing this movie, but I haven't read the book either.

So, who in your opinion has done the best southron accent? The accents are all so different down there, how do you pick?

Gravatar I saw the movie on the dish several months ago and did not like it at all. I really had not read any reviews, had not read the book and had only read something about the music which was done by the people who did "O Brother Where Art Thou". The music was ok not as good as OBWAT but ok. The story line was just plain poorly done though. By their telling it you southrons were a bunch of hapless dunderheads who were not smart enough to defeat the local yokel law, (sheriff), let alone fight a war against the north.

Gravatar Spacebunny,
Like you can tell where people are from MN/MA/CHICAGO/,MASS/WI that's how. Tell Vox hello for me.
Brand X

Gravatar I'm with UO, seeing the previews told me that watching the movie would be the equivalent of having needles inserted into my eyeballs.

Gravatar BrandX

No kidding. I didn't ask if there were different accents, that's obvious. He said there were only a couple of actors that had done them well, I asked who he thought they were.

Gravatar Fred Thompson, oh he's from Tennessee.

It's not the yankees that sound like Southrons that's so bad, at least they are tryin' to sound civilized, but the Southerners who try to talk/sing like yankees that chaps my ass. Faith Hill and wannabe frenchman come immediately to mind. Don't get me started on the dicksy chicks... *retch*

Gravatar I'm curious (I have niether seen the film, nor read the book) was the author's name included in the movie title? I know Steven King has sued a few times to have his name removed from a hollywood butchering of his novels. I'm curious if this one did, or if anyone knows his/her reaction.

Gravatar I can't handle Renee Zelwegger's over-the-top accent in that movie. It's like nails on a chalkboard for me.

HATED that film.

Gravatar Renee Z is from Houston, pretty authentic accent, a little overdone, but not much, I'm from there too. The movie made us all out to be dirty poor white trailer trash. Great Christian portrayal as well, there's a 'Christian' minister in the film who ... well never mind

Gravatar By the way, Nate and Mr. Ipsa, I shot a couple of hundred rounds with the A3 Bushmaster .223 this weekend, great fun like you said, but already wanting a heavier gun - maybe next year. Thanks for the advice.

Gravatar I caught it on cable a couple of months ago. I never knew that it was a book to begin with. I assumed that some Hollywood homo had either written the script or butchered it.

I'm not surprised to see I was correct.

As for the Southern accent thing. I recently saw Con Air for the first time and I believe that Nicholas Cage's accent is horrendous (the character and plot stink too).

Whereas in the movie Big Fish Ewan McGregor (a brit) does a natural sounding Southern accent.
But I hail from the New Orleans/Miss gulf coast region so I'm probably biased here.

Gravatar I didn't even watch the previews for "Cold Mountain". Having been raised in southern California I am not surprised at all about Hollywood once again maligning the south and butchering the original novel. You all can't believe all the PC junk that was crammed down my throat going through the public school system there.

Gravatar Spacebunny, sorry about that,my bad.
Nate, check out my last post on Vox's blog about the slave issue.

Gravatar I unwittingly found myself in a group that watched this movie a few months ago and was unable to absent myself easily, so I decided to go ahead and suffer through it.

It sucked.

Not just the way they butchered the story, and showed a sickening (and unreal) side of the South, but in fact, the movie just plain sucked.

If it had been set in Bulgaria, it would have sucked.

If you haven't watched it, you haven't missed a thing, except a horrible experience.

Gravatar Welcome back Dys!

We've missed ya darlin'!

Gravatar Guess I'm the only one who liked it. Funny thing was they filmed it in Romania. And passed it off as the South.

I had no idea it was Romania when watching it. And the film shows bad and good people on both sides, North and South.

I found it interesting that Jude Law's character had an American Indian friend fighting alongside him in the Confederate army. He was a cool, badass dude this Indian.

Rent it anyway, guys and gals. Ya might be surprised. Or not, heh-heh.

Gravatar As I said before, I only watched about 30 minutes of it and found it somewhat depressing.
(1. Of course, the minister is going to turn out to be a bad guy...)

I don't watch movies to be educated or even really care if they are correct (historically or otherwise). When I see an inaccuracy, I make a mental note... along with firearm / flashlight / knife inaccuracies (although those I usually mention to SR) and I continue to watch the movie waiting to be entertained.

Gravatar Thanks Nate.
I feel great! The day after the ablation I woke up and realized my heart wasn't pounding upon awakening. I was stunned. I thought everybody's heart pounded and raced as they got out of bed in the morning. This is so incredible, I've so much more energy and it's wonderful not having my heart thump around and race due to atrial flutter. Thank you God my conditon was fixable!

Gravatar JACIII: Was Leonardo DiCaprio in it?

nah, it was some other homo.
